How awesome was Freddie Mercury?

I have Amazon Prime and was finally getting around to checking out the music selection on it. Unfortunately, not much Queen on it.
I was listening to multiple Queen cover bands and the song "Under Pressure" and the song just stinks without his voice. Many others do as well.
That dude had pipes and style for days.
He is missed.

He was the greatest male vocalist of all time and second place isn't remotely close.

Same skill set as Elton John. John could out write him, but i dont know who could ousting him?
Nobody really. Maybe you can name someone who is a tie? But better? Nope.

Freddie Mercury was so incredible. I can only imagine what it was like to see him live. Watching recorded performances has me totally captivated. Just an unbelievable singer and performer

Elton John only writes the music to his songs. All the lyrics are written by Bernie Taupin. It is amazing how they work together though, most people when writing a song put together a melody and then write lyrics. They go about it the exact opposite. Taupin will send Elton lyrics and then Elton builds the melody and composition of the music to fit those lyrics.

He's obviously very awesome and the most dynamic vocalist in modern music history. He single-handedly brought opera singing to the mix as an asset for rock and roll.

Bowie is terrible on Under Pressure. That song really exposed him.

Uh no.....he may have been the greatest rock male vocalist, but I assure you there were other types of music, namely R&B that he would have struggled to pull off. His range was stellar but as we've often discussed, range is way over rated....
He was a genius, an incredible songwriter, performer and arranger. The fact the he arranged all those harmonies alone makes him one of the most talented musicians ever, however anytime you start making statements about "the greatest" of all time, it's gonna be a tough sell.

Not to take anything away from Freddie, but I imagine there are any number of operatic tenors who could do what he did vocally.

I also think that before he destroyed his vocal cords that Geoff Tate, formerly of Queensryche, could pull off most of what Freddie Mercury does.

Queen was the best show in an arena that I've ever seen. Their crescendo was on "Bohemian Rhapsody" during the "for me... for MEEEE..." part. There would be fuse-like smoke bombs leading to the center of the stage, an explosion would go off right at the kick-in part and Mercury would leap off the drum riser through the mushroom cloud and land center stage right as another flashpot would detonate. Amazing.
I don't know what it took to time all that so perfectly but holy crap, I can't even describe how the audience reacted. I damn near fell over.
And this was back when concerts were 8 or 9 bucks.

No wonder Freddie died of AIDS with all the guys like the ones in this thread on his jock all the time.

I wouldn't say their collaboration approach is "amazing". It's just different.
Many other songwriting tandems likely do the same.

Agree 100%. There were few, if any that could match Tate's ability on the first 3 queensryche records.
I think he was trained by his parents, both opera singers. Lengthy touring & heavy smoking certainly did his voice in.
Tony Harnell is another of several vocalist that I believe was better than mercury.

I like Brad Delp (Boston) for that #2 spot, but I hear what you're saying.
For a rock band to have and operatic-quality lead singer is pretty impressive. His showmanship and lyrics were almost lagniappe, although Freddie's vision, lyrics, drive and sense of musicality (he was an excellent piano player and serviceable on other keys and rhythm guitar). It was almost Freddie Mercury and Queen (and I think a lot of the other three), which is how tall a shadow he cast.
There is a group of male "rock" singers that form that upper tier of talent based solely on the singing ability (assuming any appreciable commercial success and significantly sized body of work for comparison): Elvis Presley, Paul Rodgers, David Coverdale, Chris Cornell, Brad Delp, Freddie Mercury and, maybe, Layne Staley. If you expand your definition of "rock" music just a little, you can include Ray Charles, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye.
And Freddie even stands out from that group.
