Horrible, terrible, abominable hit records

Where would rock 'n roll be without them? Johnathan King, "Everyone's Gone to the Moon," Top 40 hit, 1965-66:

"Long time ago, life just begun
everyone went to the sun ..."
There are two notorious pedophiles in this video. Who are they?

I'm still not certain how it became a hit record, but some folks called "The Baha Men" had a song called:
Who let the dogs out?
Inescapable song for the better part of 6 months in 2000.
Just awful.

I was never fond of "MmmmBop" by Hanson, or "Disco Duck" by Rick Dees, or "Dancing on the Ceiling" by Lionel Richie, but one of the worst efforts ever had to be "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" by Wang Chung. That song is just nasty.

I still have a difficult time putting together how "My Humps" by Black Eyed Peas a. got thought of in the first place, b. got released by an actual record company and c. got popular.

Fergie (and I concede she has a modicum of talent) is at least partially responsible for a number of songs in this category. Your "My Humps" (brilliantly covered by Alanis - if you haven't seen it, check it out), something else by the BEP called, "Boom Boom Pow" - and, of course, her solo masterpiece, "Fergilicious" - just awful.

This might get some downvotes by the 80's glam fans, but I never understood the appeal of "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue. It's about as vanilla a melody as you can get, and has a piano line that would even be embarrassing for a 7-year old to play at a recital. I guess the band had to settle with "Home Sweet Home", since someone already came up with "Chopsticks" first...

I'm not going to downvote you. I'm not even going to bat for Home Sweet Home as the greatest song ever. But "horrible" or "terrible" is hard to defend, too. Is it simple? Hell, a lot of rock music is simple. Horse With No Name is 2 fricking chords - easy ones, too. I can teach a 6-year old how to play it in 2 minutes and I can barely play beginner/intermediate guitar myself. Now, ole boy does play those chords about every which way you can think of and rarely plays them the same way a second time during the song, but that doesn't make the song terrible - just simple.
And Home Sweet Home does build - Nikki isn't that great of a musician and that's his piano part. But Tommy and Mick always brought it and did so for this song. I would rate it well above average for the genre and one of Crue's better songs (although not even a GOAT Motley Crue song).

It's Chopin compared to something like "My Humps" or "Who Let the Dogs Out"

I get that rock music can still be simple but enjoyable...hell, I love AC/DC and some 70's Kiss, so I'm certainly no music snob, lol...
I dunno, in context with the scene at its time, there's something about that song that screams to me "look at us, if we put a piano in our song, it'll sell records without us even trying!" It just feels so standard and antiseptic to me, especially for a ballad. Maybe if a more capable artist covered the song--and maybe played it in a minor key, for good measure--I'd have a different outlook about it...but as is, it sounds too much like it came from the wallet moreso than the heart. IMO, of course...

Thankfully, I never listened to either song enough to notice any piano in the first place

Pick any Coldplay song.

I hate that song so much. My high school mascot was the Bulldogs and every football game we played when we would run out on the field they would blare "who let the dogs out" over the PA. I gotta say there is nothing more intimidating to the opponent than that song.

The best thing is that this song is about ugly chicks in the club.

I love the macarena. Great dance tune.
I nominate the Ohio express and 1910 fruit company? "yummy yummy yummy (I got love in my tummy)"
Penned by Levine and resnick. Once named #2 all time silly lyrics by Dave Barry a book of bad songs. I hated that our culture made it a hit.

So do I.
I also remember that when that song was popular, my dad and his new wife took me and my siblings/step siblings to the top of the state Capitol building. My 8-year-old stomach couldn't handle the atmospheric change, and I threw up Cap'n Crunch all over the car when we made it back down. And that song came on while I was yacking.
Now that song reminds me of the smell of puke.
True story.
