for that price rage i would go with an acoustic takamine jasmine.

A Gibson Dove or Hummingbird make good beginner guitars.

Get a Fender. They sound good for the price.

If you find one of these in the $100-$200 range, let me know....I'll buy every one you can get your hands on.

In your price range, you should be looking at a used guitar on ebay or pawn shop.

ETA: I've been playing for a long time and always get the question of what to buy when just starting out playing. I give the same advice every time: Spend as much as you can reasonably afford. The better guitars are easier to play.
They almost always have:
1. Truss rods in the neck, which allows for a thinner neck.
2. Better bridge setup, which allows the strings to be closer to the fretboard, and
3. Better tuners, which help keep the guitar in tune.

If you could afford around $400.00, you can pick up a Pre Fender Guild acoustic; you'll have a quality guitar that you'll always be able to get your money out of...if you decide to sell.

Go up to $300 and get a used Taylor low end like a 110. They sound better than cheaper guitars, which will motivate you to keep practicing and playing. I still have my 110 and it's one of my favorite guitars.

every year there are people that buy guitars in december or january and regret the decision a couple of weeks later and want to sell the guitar that just sits in their living room.

I've got a strat, two teles, a prs se, and a les paul. you can't go wrong with a squier classic 50s telecaster. it is a badass guitar! it's less than $400 brand new. used would fit your range.

a lot of people say to start off playing acoustic, but you don't really have to. getting some pedals and a small practice amp might be a lot more fun for him
