Why did Kingdom Come get crucified for sounding like Led Zeppelin back in the 80s but Greta Van Fleet gets a pass today?

Because right now is a dire time commercially for hard rock/metal, so people are desperate for anything to cling to, no matter how lame it is.
Kingdom Come came along when things were a lot better, so it was easier to rag on them.

In what way does GVF “get a pass”? They’re constantly shite on for being ripoffs despite the fact that their last two albums don’t really sound much like Led Zeppelin at all.

VERY True when GVF came out. Slightly less true now.

Probably has a lot to do with time. Led Zeppelin was still pretty fresh in people's minds in the 80s. They're a nostalgia act for your grandparents today so emulating them stands out a little more.

Both bands sound really good....although the lead singers of both can be grating.

I don’t know, but I always snicker at people with GVF bumper stickers on their car. I mean, just how lame can you be?

Rock just isn’t as popular as it used to be and part of that is due to death of monoculture as well as studios putting less into promoting bands and more into promoting single people such as pop artists and rappers. Only bands top crack the Billboard top 5 as far as I can remember were Green Day, Paramore, and blink-182. It’s even worse with the Grammys no band with an album or record of the year. And looking at the choices for rock album of the year (Paramore, Metallica, Greta Van Fleet, and Queens of the Stone Age) only Greta didn’t exist pre 2010.
