While Robert Plant is offstage smoking a joint, taking a dump, etc...ie during a 30 min Dazed & Confused...Led Zeppelin is the answer. Ha Ha ! Ok, I cheated....but.

I can't pick one. Here are my top 6 (in no particular order):
Cream
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Rush (minus most of the mid-late 80's work)
Grand Funk Railroad (underrated...great live band. Live recordings are solid)
King's X (seen them live twice...fantastic)
Nirvana

Cream. Gifted musicians, a novel approach to hard rock, some of the best lyric writing in the power/hard/heavy rock genre ... and last but not least the voice of Jack Bruce, one of the power category's best singers during his years with Cream. The only thing against them may be longevity; they were only together for a couple albums. But the best of Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire are about as good as hard rock gets for musicianship, lyrics and delivery.
As for anyone who says The Experience tops all ... shite, I couldn't argue that. I could just as easily have picked them for No. 1.
