I loved Grand Funk Live, Led Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused, ABB's Live at the Fillmore East, and so on but was there a better live album that captured that generation of rock than Deep Purple's Made in Japan? What a jam...

ABB Fillmore and Who Live at Leeds are 2 of the best. Three personal faves of mine are J.Geils Full House, Rory Gallagher live (Europe '72), and Wishbone Ash Live Dates.

Not only a great album but also notable for two other things:

1) It kept up interest in the band at a time when all their studio albums were essentially unobtainable

2) Several of the songs are markedly different from the studio album versions

"Sweet Jane" - the "Heavenly wine and roses" version

"What Goes On" - for the jam fans

"New Age" - different lyrics

"Ocean" - long outro

It's hard not to go with Live at Leeds and Waiting For Columbus as 1A and 1B. At least I've listened them more than any other live albums.

Two others that need a mention:

Live Rust - Neil Young
11/17/70 - Elton John
