I really enjoy their music. It's a very accessible approach to the Blue Oyster Cult / Deep Purple-type of hard rock sound. Very fresh and catchy.

I was also fortunate to catch them three times recently (Civic NOLA, Varsity BR, Voodoo NOLA), and they put on a tremendously entertaining show. The Civic show was particularly bonkers.

What concerns me is this ongoing lawsuit by the former Ghouls against Papa / Tobias. The mystery behind the music and performance is basically gone. We haven't heard many updates on new music, presumably because the wind is currently out of the sails as a result of the legal fiasco.

I hope Papa IV is just biding his time and hits us with a killer follow-up to Meliora, which was a revelation. These guys seemed poised to take over the world, but fizzled considerably after "Square Hammer."

I know there are some fans in here. Thoughts?

If you aren't familiar with their music, treat yourself:

Ghost - "Absolution"

Ghost - "He Is"

Ghost - "Cirice"

They haven't released anything since Square Hammer so its hard to say they fizzled considerably. They just did a huge US tour with Iron Maiden too. The lawsuit may have taken away some of the mystique of the band but I think their future is bright.

Hopefully you are right.

To clarify, they seemed to be a freight train during the Meliora tours, with a lot of buzz among fans and press. It just seems like the air has left the balloon a bit since this nasty suit surfaced. And the unmasking undermined the entire concept.

Go listen to a band called Dissection.

Listen to the album "storm of the lights bane" for real swedish death/black metal.

Realise ghost is a joke.

I'm not familiar with this lawsuit you're talking about. So I'd love to hear more about it. But when I saw them at the Varsity last year they were a well-oiled machine.

You've got a good thing going when you can pull off absurd satanic pop-metal.

The singer fired the entire band. Some former band members sued him saying he didn't pay them their fair share. He said the band is a glorified solo project and they were just session players and not entitled to a cut of the profits.

It kind of hurts the band's mystique since now we know everyone's name and Tobias has even come out and publicly admitted he was Papa Emiritus. Some other guy is suing him saying he invented the evil pope character too.

I only discovered Ghost shortly before seeing Maiden in Houston earlier this year (researching the opening band). Not a huge fan of some of the first albums but I can't get Meliora out of my head. It's addicting, and I've slowly started adding other songs to my collection (Year Zero, some of their EP covers, Zenith). Can't believe you saw them at The Varsity. I guess that won't happen again, but I will go out of my way to see them headline as soon as I get the chance. Can't explain it. Maybe it's the devil or something, but I'm hooked.

One more thing: Ghost has some very famous fans in the hard rock world. I think they'll (Papa and his ghouls) be around for a while. However the lyrics are so overtly satanic that I think he'll have a hard time 'taking over the world'. PR nightmare for whoever is behind them.

Phil Anselmo has been talking about them since before their first album came out. Dave Grohl produced an EP and probably played drums with them. Phil and Danzig were hanging out in one of the box suites at the last Civic show. Looked like they were having a great time.

They're not trying to appeal to Katy Perry fans. Anyone who would like this type of music isn't put off by the lyrics. They were even being played on 105.1 in Lafayette before they went all classic rock.
