Anyone who says they aren't a fan of the new album should really give this a watch. Amazing sound.

I can't watch any of the live stuff until I see him on cinco. I feel like it will spoil the show if I watch!

I watched it.....

And I must say, it made me rethink my initial assessment after my first listen of the album. I was a bit hasty in judgement, and after a second (and now in the middle of a third) listen, this album is really good. Really good. Like a number of albums I have grown to love, the first listen was me trying to hear what I expected from the artist, instead of what the album is. I humbly retract my statement that this album was "pretty decent."

Call to Arms is so badass. That song makes me want to get into a bar fight, and I'm probably a shitty fighter

My first listen was the same way. It was so different and I was scared of the change. Now though, after about 20 times of playing the album all the way through, every single song is so badass to me. Breakers Roar is probably my least favorite on the album. Hurt me when Sturg said it was probably his favorite song on it.

Been meaning to get back to comment on this thread. It has grown on me a lot and I no longer think it's terrible

I was in the same boat. I HATED it on my first listen. Sucked it up and played it again the next day and it started growing on me. It's pretty awesome. And the live version the poster on the last page posted made it SOOOO much better than I thought it was

Sturgill was featured on NPR this morning in a 5 minute piece. LINK

I saw him last night. He did all of the new album first, then played most of Metamodern backwards (song order), then I think played most of High Top. He played for about 2 hours straight, which surprised me because he said he had some terrible allergies or a cold, and kept saying how bad he sounded. He honestly sounded really good, but you could tell something was a little off. Had some incredibly long jam at the end. The brass added a great deal to the show. I definitely recommend going to see him if you get the chance.

Yea I hear he was a bit sick, and this is the first show of the tour. I imagine it will sound a lot better with him feeling well. Glad to hear he's playing 2 hour sets. Unfortunately I have to miss him in Dallas this weekend.

Sturgill was great. He started at 8:50 and played until 11:15. He played the entire last album "Sailors" to start off the show. Afterwards, he dug in to his catalogue from the previous albums. Smoke was rolling in the show, Texas brisket was not to blame. Sturgill made a comment early in the show that it "smelled good in here" - lol. The owner obviously oversold capacity as you could barely move from the entrance to the exit - locals were complaining to no end, however we still had fun. Catch him in the future if you get a chance-his new horn section really complements his act/show!

A good time was obviously had by all - the aftermath...

So I picked this album up on RSD due to so many on here raving about Sturgill. Not knowing much about him, I figured "what the hell, it's only one record". I have listened to this album about 5 times in the last 5 weeks, and it gets better with each spin.

I guess initially I was sort of negatively biased as it falls in the "country" genre, of which I am not a huge fan of...but classifying this as country is sort of like classifying Lyle Lovett as country--which is a stretch.

I suppose the last 20 years of Bro Country has put such a negative connotation on the genre that when a fantastic classic country album by a very talented musician comes out, it's tough to get out from under the stigma.

Long story short...great friggin' record!

Easily AOTY thus far for me. Give Metamodern Sounds in Country Music a spin as well. I think you'd really enjoy it. I still listen to it regularly and it's over 2 years old.
