I have recently fallen flat out in love with Sara Bareilles
eta....but of ALL time? Has to be Sarah Vaughan THAT is the closest thing to an actual musical instrument that anyone has ever had in their throat, my friends

King of May shows off some amazing vocals by her, plus she is a phenominal wordsmith.
As for my personal favorite....
Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
someone posted about another singer's voice could be an instrument, well EF used her voice as an instrument intentionally. It's common place to never know what she is saying, becuase she changes the lyrics everytime she sings songs.... says it's strictly about the music
I'll also add Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays). Love her whispy voice. One other uknown band I came across back in the 90's is The Love Club. Don't know the singer's name, but damn she was amazing. Look her up and see if you can find their only CD; it's worth every effort.

Sara Bareilles is phenomenal. Seen her live three times. Will go back again. And again. And again.

she gets my vote as well. her singing voice isn't what you'd expect after hearing her speak. she's got a fantastic band too.
