I admit, I am not a huge fan. I like a few of his songs but really haven't listened to him much. My wife is a big fan which is why I went.

Talent wise, he is great. He can sing and he plays the front man well.....well....I'll get to that in a minute. His band is super tight and they rock pretty loud at certain points in the show.

My personal take on him is he relies on his singing talent/ performance and that is what carries him. Musically, its pretty generic stuff. I got bored pretty quick and spent most the show watching the crowd do the white people shuffle dance. As for his front man performance, he is a pretentious frick. He really loves to prance and preen.....he pretty much is a modern day J Geils. He looked exactly like this last night and stole J Geils moves....as well as stealing Jackson Brown's songs....Jackson should sue him.

My wife loved the show. So if you are a fan, you'll get your moneys worth.

I've always thought that the whole performance/persona was intended to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek and ironic.

Yeah I feel like it's fairly obvious. I'm impressed he can express a surprising amount of emotion in spite of this though. The little breakdown in Chateau Lobby is a good example of this.

I had heard this. But It didn't come across as such to me....and I have seen performers that can pull the ironic thing off. He did sit down and talk to the crowd and have a little back and forth with some people up front and he came across better....really, really dry since of humor.

It is.

Also, the magic in his music, instrumentally speaking, is heard best in the studio.

His stage persona and alias (Father John Misty) is a big act. He's supposed to come off as a pretentious womanizer.

The guy has a pretty dry sense of humor if you've ever heard him tell jokes when he just went by J. Tillman or with Fleet Foxes.

ok....I obviously missed that....but again, I'm not a big fan. But the music was still basic, predictable pop....or is that part of his act too?

Supposed to be kind of leisure suit larry lounge singer stuff that, if you dig into it, is surprisingly complex and interesting underneath the surface.

Sort of a paen to hedonism. I haven't listened to his second album as much as his first, but the first is the story of his character, Father John Misty, moving out to Laurel Canyon and getting involved and sucked into all sorts of debauchery and basically having a mental breakdown/crisis of faith as he explores the dark side of Hollywood.

I don't guess I ever noticed Geils with Wolf dancing around so much.

Honestly, if that is truly your assessment of his music, then I don't think that you are "getting it."

Eh...That's a stretch. I think he's a good songwriter and his lyrics are anything but predictable.

Will be there. I dig about 50% of his stuff and get super bored with the rest. This'll be first time seeing him live. Will report back.

I wish more of his songs sounded like True Affection. Bored in the USA and Chateau Lobby 4 are just not my cup of tea...anytime those play on Sirius/XM I flip the station immediately.
