Ok, he didn’t really need to be there. She wrote the song and can still play it insanely well.

Yeah, I got nothing against the guy personally and he has been extremely reverent towards her... but he really doesn't add anything to the song..

That said, it was a nice moment I guess...

that was amazing
happy she’s getting the flowers, she’s fantastic and always has been and she looks happy and healthy. Glad to see this and glad this happened (combs covering her song). Nothing wrong with it and she’s clearly happy about it

When did "the flowers" become a thing? I don't know why, but that expression just hits me as valley girl blonde ditz kinda dumb.

But on topic, I've heard that cover and it sounds like someone singing karaoke. Tracy Chapman was such a distinctive musician that I feel like you really have to take a different approach to bring anything to that song. Weird it became such a hit, but such is modern music. I guess at least they didn't slow it down to a funeral dirge with cheesy breathy emo-vocals like most covers I hear these days.

Dead link in OP

Full Performance

Man, It’s so good!!
I don’t mind that he covered it because it allowed the song to resurface for the younger generation and now they get to see Tracy sing it live. Love it!!

That was great. Thanks for posting. What's up with the random people standing up like Taylor Swift and the two lesbians?

This exactly what I thought the first time I heard it on the radio.

Not going to lie, I get a little angry thinking about this dude blowing up by covering it when just a few years ago The Black Pumas covered it and was a much better cover. Actually had their own take on it, not just a lazy sing along.

Yes thanks for posting. Very nice cover.
I’m not that familiar with Luke Combs but his fans took his version and blew it up apparently. Really don’t know why it got so much attention over other covers.
Maybe it was just Tracys time to sing it again.
Everything happens for a reason

I was around some teenagers recently that only knew the Combs version. I played the original - and they recoiled in disgust. I was like "it's basically the same thing". They didn't agree. They can't take to hear Chapman's.

Song is great
Cover is nowhere near as good as the original - also imo it doesn’t hit the same coming from a white dude

Well he was the reason the song was reintroduced after 30+ years. I thought it was great by both of them. He toned his version down for this duet.

You mean like it should be and how I grew up?

Tracy Chapman has been nothing but brilliant in all of this. She’s just happy people enjoy the song. That’s it.

First time I’ve heard it but it doesn’t appear to be on the album, but the deluxe album as additional tracks.

So they didn’t promote it as much as their singles off the first album. While this was a big single off Luke’s album.

At my nephews graduation party a few months back me and my brother asked a bunch of the kids there if they knew Tracy Chapmans version/that it was a remake and none of them did.

I guess they didn't give too much thought to the "I work in a market as a checkout girl" line.

This performance chokes me up every time I watch it.
I think my favorite part is Tracy starts the chorus the first 2 times and then they sing it together the last time.
