I'm looking at the Grestch White Falcon hollowbody bass, and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it? I've played it before, and have been sort of obsessed with it since, and am seriously thinking about pulling the trigger. The only downside is that it might not be made in America. I'm also thinking about perhaps getting a baritone guitar, but I don't even know where to begin with that.

What do you play? Beginner? Advanced?

It looks awesome, but from a practical standpoint if I'm spending 3k on bass stuff I'm getting a American p bass and a badass rig.

I've been playing for over a decade. I accumulated plenty of instruments that I just recently sold with the idea that I'd get just one very versatile bass. I do enjoy the American P bass, and I was very close to pulling the trigger on an American Jazz deluxe, but there is some something about the tone of this Grestch.

I personally have the Fender American J.
Have never played any Grestch bass guitars though.
My obsession has always been Rickenbacker.

I'm not gonna argue with you if you're in love with the tone. It's your money you should get what you want.

This is where I'd disagree with the Gretsch.

It tends toward the woody side, but the tone is full and it feels versatile. It avoids the muddiness in the lower registers.

I do love the hollow body, but I've just begun to look. My first bass many years ago was this lovely Ibanez hollow body that was surprisingly playable and I've been sort of obsessed since. I had an Fender Jazz 5 that I destroyed due to being young and stupid.

I've thought long and hard about the Rickenbacker as well, but I haven't had the chance to play one.

Is that so? I know vintage Gretsch's are American made, and honestly I'd like an American made instrument.

rickenbacker has a new bass model out that I like a lot. it's a no frills 4003S model... a reissue of the ones sir paul and squire used to play...

quote:

“People wanted the look of the 4001S without the binding and with dot inlays. It’s the classic look, that Chris Squire look,” Rickenbacker’s Brendan Duff explained. “The 4003S is pretty much a 4003 without the binding, you’ve got a single mono input, and you’ve got dot inlays.

LINK

you can find a used one for around $1400 or sometimes less

I DO.

I play a 51 reissue with the tele headstock and a Jaguar. Both Squier if that needs to be said.

Oh and one more thing. That Gretsch is a big ginormous fricking bass. It would cause me to have issues playing it

I had one of the first Squire P basses, guess it was around 1992, played and sounded great. Was nice to be able to lean it against the amp in a bar and take a break without worrying about it. Don't play anymore, but wish I still had it.

Yes i play. My current bass is a 4 string fender jazz but in the past I have played ernie ball...P basses...Ibanez 5 strings....

Gretch is a great guitar and I have a buddy who has a white falcon guitar but never known anyone who plays white falcon bass. Would have to play it to determine.
