They joined up with Smashing Pumpkins AFTER their first tour. Wiki here.

ETA:

7+ months as headliner before joining SP. Only reason I knew they started out headlining was because I was at the Feb '96 show where they solidified their set list.

I left 2 tickets at will-call for a couple of friends so they could join us when they got bailed out of jail. Ended up getting invited to the afterparty. I've got a signed cigar case from backstage smokin' with Shirley Manson and Butch Vig. Good times.
