I thought GIVERS blew the Dirty Projectors out of the water when they opened for them in BR and I love the Dirty Projectors.
The Givers put on a better show than the Flaming Lips at the Varsity show too.

Just from past experience :
Headliner - Boston
Opener - Sammy Hagar (awesome)
Headliner - Eagles
Opener - Melissa Ethridge (rocked)
Headliner - The Who
Opener - Toots & the Maytals (reggae immprtals)
I don't remember many dogs opening the shows I saw.
I really think the best one was the opening act for the Prairieville Pop Festival in '69 - Cajun fiddler Doug Kershaw !

I disagree. I can think of several shows where I only went to see the opening act. I went to see the Cult open for Metallica. I left after Metallicas third song. Living Color and GnR opened for the Stones and I loved them. Even small shows I went to see The Mahones and Frank Turner open for the Dropkick Murphys. I have seen my share of some bad opening acts but most have been great.

I'm normally impressed with the opening bands. There's been a few times I've enjoyed the opener over the headliner

Seriously, what did they expect?
quote:
Micky Dolenz noted:
Jimi would amble out onto the stage, fire up the amps, and break into "Purple Haze," and the kids in the audience would instantly drown him out with, "We want Daavy!" God, was it embarrassing.
And Mike Nesmith observed:
Th[e] night he opened in front of us ... he walked into the beast. There were twenty thousand pink waving arms. He would sing "Foxy" and they would shout, "Davy" — "Foxy" — "Davy ..." Oh, man, it was a seriously twisted moment. He lasted seven dates.
Seriously, what did they expect?

I have never seen an opening act I thought was terrible some I thought were not that great.
The "band" that opened for Mutemath at the Varsity was the very definition of terrible. They give terrible a bad name.

I have seen some strange opening acts also.
Nazereth opened for the Marshall Tucker Band.
7 seconds opened for REM
funniest-
Adam Ant opened for Ramones. He got hit with everything people could find.

one worse feeling: missing the opening band and 6 months later realizing how bad arse said band is and you wished you wouldn't have missed them live.
A friend of mine dicked around and made me miss The Dear Hunter opening a show.
I also just thought of two other great openers I saw:
Vermillion Lies
William Elliott Whitmore

Ever heard of Earphunk?

Yes. I knew them before they were "Earphunk." I know they've opened up for Galactic and P Groove in BR, but they were obviously established there. I am talking about an opener that tours with the headliner across the country.

I have only heard of one of those openers, and I am beyond well versed in the circuit

The Wallflowers are opening for Eric Clapton in March. Pretty awesome opening act.

Agreed, but I think everyone at this point realizes P Groove is garbage and Brock Butler is a total junkie.

Caribou toured with Radiohead last year through mexico and japan, and I'm just as blown away by their show as radiohead

Your favorite bands all opened for someone at one point in their careers.
When Def Leppard came to the United States to tour in support of Pyromania, they opened for Billy Squier - after a show or two, Squier had enough, "I'm not going to follow those guys for 6 weeks!", and they parted ways amicably.
