I promise I'm not a hipster. Is it wrong that I really enjoy bands such as

Band of horses
Arcade fire
Phantagram
Vampire weekend
Modest mouse (not counting their last few albums)
Milky chance
Foster the people
Of monsters and men

The vast majority of my favorite bands, at least from the 1980s on, could be considered indie rock.

One time I almost started liking some music I heard till I looked and saw it was on a major label.

Whew! That was a close call.

For sure, I quit following a while back but most of what I listen to is indie from 10+ years ago. I sound hipster as hell but in regards to my music it's just what I listen to.

Try

Built to Spill
Jackie O Motherfvcker
Mogwai
The Books
Six Parts Seven
Do Make Say Think
KC Accidental
Dntel
Hood
Damien Jurado
Red House Painters
Matt Pond
David Kilgour
Wilco
The National

fun joke and all, but I really don't think that is anyone that listens to indie music's mindset.

Alot of my favorite "indie" bands are actually on major labels now (e.g. Built to Spill), but still get classified as indie, I guess due to sound.

Ive primarily listened to indie music since the 80s... occasionally those bands sign with major labels (happened a lot in the 90s)... some have even started out on major labels (it sounds contradictory, I know)..

I doubt most people that take time to post on a board about music, primarily listen to mainstream corporate music... I could be wrong..

I'll do a little Foster the People and Of Monsters and Men, but for the most part this stuff reminds me of my ex and pisses me off

i remember when REM left IRS and signed that huge major label deal...it caused much rending of garments among the indie-radio crowd. they actually had to come out and address the perception they were selling out

it was pretty funny

I can't stand most indie pop bands. I feel like Indie "rock" is just a catch all term for all new rock music that doesn't sound like Nickelback or Metal these days, kinda like how "alternative rock" was for everything that wasn't hair metal in the early 90's.

I've been digging Manchester Orchestra, Menzingers, Arctic Monkeys, Alabama Shakes, ect lately.
