Just wondering. A few posters on this board claim they have better taste in music than the rest of us non- musicians because they played in the LSU marching band and started a foo fighters cover band in BR

You're the one saying Clapton is overrated, what do you think?

Marching band and Foo Fighters cover band aside (brilliant), I´d say it´s a definite ´yes´.

Or how we refer to it in the scene "listening to Widespread Panic"

I find that often musicians get far more preoccupied with technique and chops than the overall effect of the music just as sound. That focus on the mechanics of it can lead you to be a fan of absolutely terrible music and also not catch the spark of more artistic minded stuff.

No.

Let's take my favorite, Adele. She's just swept the Grammys, had most popular album in 2015 and 2016, and sold out every show on a 125+ city world tour. She broke Sydney, Perth, and Brisbane in the last month.

Oh, and she's one of the three or four best female pop vocalists on earth.

She has, IMO, shite taste in music. She adores Beyoncé, the Spice Girls, and Ed Sheeran.ack:

But when she records, she evokes Carole King, Roberta Flack, and Alison Krauss.

I'm a musician and have a broad and deep range of musical tastes. Most of you here would think it's shite. But I like what I like. Adele likes what she likes. And y'all like what y'all like.

So, basically, we all have shite taste in music.

TL;DR : No.

No but it's funny watching the jam band cuck crew on here try to offer up commentary on guitarists. Zomg Barber has great tone!

Sweet melt btw.

Do you know if she really likes ^^^^ or is it playing nice for the press, these are actually her contemporaries, and it's better to be the all around nice girl. Like for instance how can these musicians at the Grammy's or Hand-me-Another Country music award show not laugh at some of these winners? To their face?

Personally I'd say as a whole musicians have better taste, but it's rather knowing more about what's going on, and so you appreciate certain aspects better. You understand breaks, swapping lead, 12bar or 16 (square), modes, and you know why you like something. While the most mundane 3chord standard might sell millions, is it really a better song than something else the same performer does (and loves). Not to say an untrained ear can't still hear altered chords and and appreciate their flavor; but as a whole playing makes you more aware of the parts, because you're listening so as to reproduce.

ETA: of course this could just make you a better listener... not better taste (Hmmm)

Musicians tend to be far more knowledgeable about music in that they tend to be exposed to more bands, particularly on the local scene. However, more exposure does not necessarily equal better taste. Taste is very subjective, especially when it comes to music. There are few things that all music fans would agree are of poor taste, because there is no music out there that appeals to no one. Every song has a fan base, large or small.

With that said, I think musicians certainly THINK they have better taste than non-musicians. Some of that smugness comes from knowledge of theory, composition, and just generally knowing what kind of work goes into making music. The rest of that smugness comes from typically having listened to more bands. "Oh, I've been listening to :insertunderground/localband: recently. They're not really 'mainstream', so I'm not suprised you never heard them before."

If a statement like that makes me a loser in the eyes of you of all people then I don't want to win!! Good luck on the MSF btw if that's the route you took.

This.

I love Pearl Jam. I listen to their Sirius channel often. It's amusing when they run a "band member pick". They always pick the weirdest shite. The bassist is the worst. "I like their music as its more angular." Another guy (Stone) has his clip run often. He picks a Zepplin song and takes In The Evening?

It's like because they are professional musicians so they can't just pick great stuff. Stone can't just play Ramble On because it's not weird enough. Feels contrived.

This. Bassists are the absolute worst about this, but drummers can be guilty too. "Hey, listen to this track! Do you hear that mixed meter interplay between the bass and double pedal drumming!?" "Yes, but can you hear it over the suck?"

Often times, they'll pick these really weird songs that have really cool concepts embedded in them, but if said concept is not used in the creation of a "good" song, then what's the point? If these creative techniques are not used in an artful way, what's the point? Metal heads can be really bad about this. They'll make you listen to some song because of some really cool mixed meter breakdown, but it's barely audible over the fact that the "vocalist" is just screaming over everything and the distortion on the guitar is so heavy that all the notes run together. The interplay is lost so it just sounds like noise.
