What is your favorite David album? I have considered listening to his discography.

Scary Monsters is far and away his best album. If you've never really listened to any of his stuff before though, you might want to start with a pop album like Let's Dance first.

Ziggy is perfect IMO. Hunky Dory is also very good, but a couple songs are so-so. I also like Diamond Dogs.

I can't get into much of his stuff after the 80's, except for Blackstar, which is pretty incredible, but very sad.

As others have said, Hunky Dory and Ziggy are great. My favorite might be The Man Who Sold The World. Some of it almost sounds like Sabbath. I also like Aladdin Sane and Low.

Steer clear of the late '80s and Tin Machine. Most of his stuff after that is pretty weak too.

It really depends on what Bowie you like. His career is so rich and varied. But I'm more of punk fan, so I like his Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs stuff the best. But I'd really consider trying out his entire discography, it's all so wildly different from itself.

Check out this documentary David Bowie - Five Years

I've always loved these albums, but I'm also partial to Hunky Dory, as others said. "Life On Mars" has always been a favorite Bowie song of mine, and the part early in the documentary where Rick Wakeman talks about that song and plays it on the piano just made me appreciate it more.

Description from PBS website, where I first saw it.

quote:

The film starts with 1971 and the creation of Ziggy Stardust. Next, we explore 1975, which saw the release of “Young Americans” and the “Thin White Duke.” 1977 saw “Low” and “Heroes,” two hugely influential albums.
After that, 1980 saw one of the most iconic songs of the decade with the release of “Ashes to Ashes.” Lastly, we explore “Let’s Dance” and 1983 -- the year Bowie went commercial.
This film offers a unique opportunity to explore Bowie’s work and creative vision and shows Bowie not just as the rock star chameleon, but also as an artist drawing on rich and diverse cultural influences.

"Station to Station" and "Let's Dance" are his finest albums, IMNO.

"Young Americans": honorable mention.
