Waylon with Tommy Allsup were officially Holly's backup band and were supposed to ride in the plane with him. Allsup, as I mentioned, lost the coin toss with Valens.

Last I heard head Tommy is living in Texas.

Jennings was going to fly with Holly but his old friend The Big Bopper, a very large man, had complained from the beginning of the tour about how uncomfortable the tour bus seats were for him. Add in the fact that it was a freezing February night in the Midwest, and he begged Jennings to give up his seat on the plane so he The BB could get warm for a while and have a little space to travel in. Jennings finally gave in.

Here’s Waylon’s account of the last conversation he had with Buddy Holly.
“I remember the last time I saw Buddy. He had me go get us some hot dogs. He was leaning back against the wall in a cane-bottom chair and he was laughing at me. He said, ‘So you’re not going with us on the plane, huh? Well, I hope your ol’ bus freezes up. It’s about 40-below out there and you’re gonna get awful cold.” So I said, ‘Well, I hope your ol’ plane crashes.’ I was so afraid for many years that somebody was going to find out I said that. Somehow I blamed myself.” link to site

This is a song Waylon Jennings wrote to Buddy Holly called Old Friend

These first four come from the Beatle tribute album: Yesterday: A Country Music Tribje to the Beatles.

I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party by Rosanne Cash

Eight Days a Week by Lorrie Morgan

Yesterday by Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson

Help by Dolly Parton

This cover version was on the album, American IV: The Man Comes Around In My Life by Johnny Cash

This one is a reverse cover, but I couldn’t not put it on here. It’s the Beatles’ cover of the Buck Owens #1 country hit, Act Naturally It’s one of the best covers they did imo.
