Get "The Complete Recordings of Robert Johnson." Lock yourself up with it for a few months and really digest it.

You asked for classic blues and have gotten some good answers.

Let me give you a few suggestions for a slight update on classic blues. Check out Freddie King's records from the early 70's. Two from Shelter Records, with Leon Russell producing, that I really like are Getting Ready (1971), and Texas Cannonball (1972). Also, check out Burglar (1974) which was his first record on Eric Clapton's label RSO.

I love all of Freddie's records, but those 3 are my favorites. They're all a blend of classic blues, Chicago electric blues, with some Texas Road House blues mixed in.
