Christian Music (if you are a Christian)

Have you ever found any of it to be tolerable?
I have tried. I want to. I wish that Christian music could link me to having greater faith. But it doesn't.
{Insert King of the Hill quote/meme}
What am I missing? Is it because the people who are often Christians and only listen to this are a bit, um, nutty? My youth pastor even listened to Stone Temple Pilots after he forced some Steven Curtis Chapman on us...so it was all good and I never felt bad about anything I listened to. I also loved how Dee Snider explained his love for hard rock and "vile" messages within to the PMAC/Senate Hearing Committee on Capitol Hill back in '85, along with his Christian faith not being swayed due to that. I just do not see how I could listen to anything but Christian music all day every day?

It's pretty bad. I think I've liked a couple songs but that's about it. Lyrics are cheesy. I've always preferred old hymns if I wanna listen to something religious

I wake my kids up each morning to "Good Morning" by Mandisa. There are some others they listen to on K-Love that I no longer hate.

More of a crossover band, but I always loved Switchfoot.

When people ask me what kind of music I like, I always tell them "everything except most hardcore rap and Christian music sung by white people."
When the Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in north Mississippi gets the spirit of the Holy Ghost all up in 'em, the results can be incredible. Bethany or Healing Place? Not so much.
I think that says it all.

High school Mersault would say listen to MxPx.
But no, "Christian music" is both a travesty in terms of quality, and in business.

Some Christian music can be tolerable. If you like prog rock then check out Neal Morse. Sola Scriptura

Listening to choirs sing old hymns is fine in the right setting.
I believe that Hell consists of nonstop Christian douchebag rock music.

Some of the older hymns revised for modern praise and worship music are alright. Most Christian "radio" music is horrible though. Growing up, the only stuff that didn't suck was Third Day, maybe? They're probably talented enough that they could have had some degree of success in secular music.
I just really hate the "I'm in love with God" whispery Christian music. Freaks me out. Plus every modern praise and worship musician talks like that, and I don't know why.

I am an old hymns guy. Often times there is a lot more truth in the hymns than in some of these new worship songs, alot of which sound like radio pop with a few inspirational lyrics thrown in.

Great topic. I view it kind of like country Music. There is good stuff out there but most of it is not on the radio. It really depends on what type of music you like. I would imagine there is good music out there for any style you like. I am a folk guy and am a big fan of singer songwriters. Andrew Peterson, Andy Gullahorn and Andrew Osenga are some of my go to guys but none of them play on the radio. They're lyrics are not cheesy and I believe convey the things that really go on in the heart of a believer. I liked Caedmon's Call back when they were around and Derek Webb before he went kind of liberal, There are some excellent Christian rap artists like Lecrae as well. I'd probably never listen to Christian radio if my kids didn't like it.

I like a bit of Christian music but there is a lot of fluff, musically speaking. Perhaps a better way for you to look for some you can tolerate is to look for specific styles of music you like and try to find christian performers in the style. Assuming you are still looking to do that.

I wish that Christian music could link me to having greater faith
I think this is a very personal thing and, for me at least, it usually is more reflective of where I am than the music itself (if that makes sense).
I'm an older guy but a couple of guys who I really liked (both passed away young) are a guy from the late 70s, early 80s named Kieth Green (his music is quite vqried in styles at that time but always piano based) and a guy from the 90s named Rich Mullen.
Maybe you will stumble upon something soon.

I prefer traditional hymns when I listen to religious music. I'm not all that familiar with Christian rock.

I want to get down on my knees and start pleasing Jesus. I want to feel his salvation all over my face.

For that matter, why isn't there any good Christian BBQ? Why can't I find a decent set of Christian tires for my car? Can I buy a pair of Christian jeans that fit me? Why isn't there an Oscar for Best Christian Movie?
Amazing Grace is a great song. So are Runnin' With The Devil, Friend of the Devil, Highway to Hell, and Hell's Bells. So is Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. There is no such thing as "Christian music." Only Christian lyrics. Music is music and there isn't anything inherently religious or ideological about a rhythm and melody, a chord progression, a time signature, etc.
If an artist sets out to make a living making "Christian music," they're probably focusing more on lyrics than they are on music. And chances are they're not talented enough to compete in the open market with the secular artists. That's more than likely how they wound up targeting a niche market in the first place. They are to the musical world what sports writers are to the field of journalism.
