Strictly from feeling emotion from his playing, give me Frusciante.

Wow three downvotes for Jerry Garcia... y’all do understand the difference between technical guitar playing and making great music with a guitar?

Not to suggest numeral uno

But this guy behind the fiddle may be the best guitarist on the stage and (Frank) the other guitarist is probably better than half that's been listed here.

Def not Hendrix or Page for that matter. Hendrix was a mess most of the time. Page is one of the goat writers imo.

Define best so we have a better idea. Hendrix is known cause he played upside down left handed Strat plugged to a Fuzz no one else was using at the time making LOTS of noise. Not to down play his playing as he was quite phenomenal to sing and play what he did at a young age very well. His tone def isnt even top 50 in guitarists I'd say.

It's hard to say best. You have to break into categories.

Shredder? VH, Satriani, Petrucci, Malmsteem. Pick one. THeyre all great.

Blues? SRV, Peter Green, Hendrix, BB King, Albert King, Clapton. Id say Green because of his use of notes. Kirwan is right under him. Hummingbird vibrato is pretty. I'd rank Kossoff right there with him as well. Many are great. Clapton pre-1970 is much better. Shouldve stayed with the Les Paul.

Metal? Iommi hands down. Though many would probably say Hetfield. John 5. Buckethead, Randy Rhoads. Zakk Wylde...

Country? Brad Paisley is pretty badass.

Its all opinionated. There is no best.

Just read through this thread, so many great names, and loved seeing some non-rock/pop guys get mentioned, Segovia, Frith, Montgomery, etc. Great thing is we can enjoy them all. Different days I'd pick different guys depending on if I'm grooving on metal, blues, jazz, classical etc. Awesome to be alive in an age where recordings of so many masters are not just available but have been unearthed from who knows where and can be seen & heard on YT.

Was just going to mention Buckethead / Brian Carroll and someone just beat me to it.

Another guy that didn't get long enough in this world, that I was very fortunate to see a couple of times, is John Campbell. Saw him in '92 in a club in NOLA, had never heard of him and he knocked me out. Next time I saw him was a year later headlining at a guitar fest at the PMAC with Buddy Guy & Sonny Landreth. Check out what he does about 5:35 into this live performance, it never gets old for me:

There isn't a "best guitarist to ever walk this earth". As much as I love Brian May >> LINK / it was kind of embarrasing when Total Guitar recently voted him the best and even Brian May kind of said so. There are so many great guitarists out there it would be impossible to say if any one of them was "the best".

You have to put Vai up there with great shredders as well.

Chet Atkins

I said this a few pages ago, but Chet doesn't get a lot of love on this topic. Pick any genre you want and he played it before any of the aforementioned artists imitated it.

Who did he learn from versus others who learned licks from him and that was their starting point? Kind of like Japanese automotive engineering.

Don’t know who Chet learned from but his play and style was about as smooth and polished as they came. Still relevant today imho.

Oh and why not throw in Sonny Landreth. Does things on a guitar most can’t figure out.
