I think this might be a topic to bookmark. Along with drummer, bassist, keyboard etc...

With that being said... I'm going to say John Butler for the best guitarist. And before anyone says anything...he is definitely better then Hendrix.

Trumpet category was tongue in cheek. I defer to your assessment of Mangione.

Well, I'm still waiting to see someone play it better than this child.

Hendrix, May, Clapton, Knopfler, Van Halen, Beck, Blackmore, Page, Gilmour. Would probably put all of those guys on tier one. Tier two would start w/ Roy Buchanan, Zappa, Allman, Gary Moore, Buckingham, Howe, Frampton,Townsend.

Interesting roster / tier ranking

Still requires categorical ranking. Includes some of the usual and expected suspects.

Lindsey Buckingham is not only one of the best riff-meisters, but he's a great melodic composer.

Frank Zappa = Buckingham?

I get it -- everything is relative in the arts.

What are Zappa's strengths? From what I've heard of his work, it's...choppy blues and ambush of the avant garde and unexpected.
