With the passing of Tom Petty, it begs the question where he and the Heartbreakers rank. I’ve always had them vying for the top spot. What are your top 5 American ‘rock’ bands? I’m using rock pretty loosely.

1 Beach Boys
2 Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band
3 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4 The Doors
5 The Eagles.

I personally enjoy Tom Petty over the rest, but realize the weren’t as important or influential as some others.

What say the Music Board?

It’s true. lol.

All these bands would be way down the list of ALL greatest bands. Why does the UK produce so many great bands and the US so few?

I love how The Byrds, a band you don't mention, were specifically copied by two you do mention (Eagles openly "set out to avoid the mistakes the Byrds made")

What’s the criteria here? Popularity, critical acclaim, influence, personal preference?

Pretty loose criteria. However you want to rank them. I’m not a big fan of Springsteen but recognize his influence/footprint on the last 30+ years so I put them on my list.

These "Best" "Greatest" threads are tough. It all comes down to what type of music you enjoy, how much real musical knowledge you posses (in other words a working knowledge of the difficulty of writing and performing said music) and what the listener has been tuned into.

Wouldn't even know where to start on answering this one. Too many great Amercican rock bands
