I've heard most of the Dead's popular stuff but what is the best album to listen to from start to finish for a beginner?

Most I've talked to have suggested American Beauty. This might be the one.

It's one of their best studio albums for sure along with Workman's Dead. They are great but just the tip of the iceberg once you start venturing towards live shows and gain an appreciation for Jerry's guitar playing.

You can't go wrong with Workingman's Dead or American Beauty.

And as a big fan I strongly suggest starting with studio albums like those two.

It can be difficult to dive into a 30 minute Dark Star without knowing their music a little already.

American Beauty

Don't listen to the people in this thread saying to start off with the live stuff

You start off the with 30 middle noodle fest stuff you'll get bored with them quick

Europe 72 is as close to a studio album that you can get IMO. Almost none of the songs jam past around 6-7 minutes and it's the best transition into live shows that you can get. And it introduces you to many great Dead songs that are not on AB or WD

Europe 72 would be my suggestion

American Beauty is awesome but you aren't getting the real picture from a studio album

No doubt start off with studio. Very hard to jump into an extended improv, it is an acquired taste. American Beauty was my first album.

Im goin to see phil tonight!!!!!

Dead studio albums suck for the most part, but workingmans and american beauty are excellent.

Having said that, start with a live show. Thats where the magics at.

Europe '72.

They were a live band, not a studio band. Suggesting a studio album is dumb.

The playing on Europe '72 is super tight and almost sounds like a studio album at times. People in this thread act like every song is some deep exploratory jam and that's not even close to being the case. There's two songs in that whole collection over 10 minutes long.

i'm in the minority, but i've always been partial to the 'mars hotel' album. of course 'american beauty' is immortal, but it might give you a false impression of the dead's entire body of work.

but really, find a good live show or two to get started....that's what it's all about.
