Covers that might be better than the original.

I nominate the Black Crowes for covering Hard to Handle.

Toots and the Maytals covering Country Road by John Denver

Absolutely better than the original, which was also grand. This might be the greatest example of a cover being better than an original that was already great.

I'll limit my list to covers that I think have eclipsed the original. In some cases, people don't even realize these are covers:

All Along The Watchtower- Hendrix
Respect- Aretha Franklin
Nothing Compares 2 U- Sinead O'Connor
I Love Rock And Roll- Joan Jett
Cum On Feel The Noize- Quiet Riot
Everybody’s Talkin’- Harry Nilsson
Babe I’m Gonna Leave You- Led Zeppelin
You're No Good- Linda Ronstandt
Me and Bobby McGee- Janis Joplin
(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding- Elvis Costello
Mad World- Michael Andrews & Gary Jules
Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley
Tainted Love- Soft Cell
Girls Just Want To Have Fun- Cyndi Lauper
You’ve Got a Friend- James Taylor

There are also several that may equal the original in many ways. I Will Always Love You, Proud Mary, Twist And Shout, You Really Got Me, I Shot The Sheriff, Woodstock (kinda) etc.

You think the Dee Dee Warwick original is more well known or popular?

Not really a cover song, but when George Michael did "Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me" live with Elton, that version was 100x better than the studio album version.
