Doc,

If you want something in the $1k range, look at the Parasound P-5. River_man here paired it with an Odyssey amp as well. It is one of the most feature packed and well built preamps for the price.

If you want a strict tube line stage with a simple circuit and no frills, look at Prima-Luma. If that interests you, I can help you get it for a bit less than retail as I know Kevin Deal, the importer for them (in Los Angeles).

thats insane, yeah they were telling me the hana was an excellent choice they had to change out something for it to work i think thats why it was delayed a day. im just glad they were able to do it there , last think i want to do this early on is destroy a 450ish cart lol. i saw your post a while back messing up back to back carts kinda scary its that easy. this is really first time messing around with turntables and vinyl so i have been trying to read up as much as i can, really can see this as a nice little hobby and something to pass on to my 6 year old son

What do you want in a pre? A line stage only? One with a phono stage too? A DAC? Solid state or tube?

I'm debating this a bit right now, but I think a simple stereo line stage is all I want, with at least a pair of inputs.

I tend to prefer solid state stuff, but that's mainly out of fear of the ancient technology that I don't fully understand and haven't actually listened to all that much. For the same reason I love my tube amp I plug my guitars into, I worry about the addition of "color" into the chain without really knowing how to evaluate the components before buying.

I think next up (and by "next" I mean in the next two months) will be a used Oppo UDP 103/5 or new 203. Not sure I want to spring for the cost of the new 205 as a DAC. But I have a moderate amount of digital music that I'd like to hear a little better, and I've had my eye on a handful of Blu Ray concerts, so I figure I can kill two birds with one stone there and keep the preamp a little simpler.

Thank you for the recs...I'm going to take a closer look into those over the coming few days. I get married in a few months, so I figure I should build the heck out of this rig now before she can tell me no.

The carts I was breaking were Lyra, but they have what is called a "nude" cantilever--the tiny Boron rod that sticks out that the diamond needle is attached to. With mine, there is nothing surrounding it (like the body of the cartridge) to protect it. So if a finger hits it--gone!

Most carts under $1k don't have a nude stylus. The least expensive one I know of that does is the Sumiko Blue Point Evo III for $500 and the Sumiko Blackbird at around $1200. The Hana is well protected by the surrounding body.

You probably won't see tables below $3k coming with pre mounted nude styluses as it would be a nightmare for the manufacturer or retail store as inexperienced handlers would be breaking them at an alarming rate, and then expecting the retailer to refund the cost--so they eliminate that problem by not installing them from the factory.

My table has what is known as a uni-pivot tonearm--they are a bitch to set up. It's like trying to ride a unicycle on a beach ball--you change one setting and then knock out two others. You go back to fix those two, and knock out the one you just set. It takes about 4 hours of jimmying to get mine right. But keep in mind that my arm has a few adjustments that aren't available on lesser tables...so that is part of the reason for the PITA of set up.

ahah thats good to hear something i was a bit worried about. kind of wish i just shelled out the extra cash and got one of the vpi since im over the 1k mark with this cart and table but im new to this and im sure it will keep me busy for a while. ive really noticed its hard to find some of the techno albums ive grown up listening to. but im finding some good stuff, sadly little rock doesnt have that great of a selection around here to shop vinyl so its mostly online until i go visit friends in different states

Your table is good...to do an entry level VPI and then add a good cart, you will be approaching the $2k mark.

Seriously...your table/cart combo is really nice.

Man.... that's a lick! You going to replace with the same stuff? Also, isn't that last one of those you just had redone?

My audio tech came out today. All 5 pieces of McIntosh gear are being sent off to McIntosh in Binghamton, NY to be surveyed for a fix or replacement.

Looks like I will be running with one of the other rigs for a little while.

And yes, one of the EICO amps I just had restored lost a transformer. I will hunt down another one and pull the transformer out of it and repair mine.

The Rotel power amp will be replaced with the new version.

So what is the standard method of insuring this stuff? Claim on your homeowners? Factory warranty covers lightning?

Sorry to hear about all you lost. Seem to remember you having had the monos for a long time or having an interesting/sentimental backstory to them.

Doc,

It's covered under homeowners, although it may take a while as I have to go through the insurance process. I have enough other gear so I won't be totally down.

The amps with the back story are my pair of McIntosh MC 2105 amps--they were pulled from the attic of Bruno's Bar on Maple St. about 15 years ago. Bruno's and T.J. Quill's across the street both had big "Mac Stacks" that powered the audio in the bars. Those amps were built around 1972 and still work fine--105 watts per channel stereo amps and 105 pounds apiece!

Probably.

There are manual gauges for around $15 and digital ones around $60

$14 for a digital??...get it.

Either one--they are all probably made at the same place.

Also, you can play records for now--you won't damage them if you use good judgement.

Get the arm to where it is totally balanced--like a see-saw that is in the middle...then adjust the weight so that it applies a little bit of downward force on the record end. You need enough to where it keeps the needle down and tracking the groove, but no too much as to really push the stylus or cantilever up into the cartridge.

Look I the original box for the Hana cartridge...there should be a spec sheet that has all its info on it. This should also have a recommended tracking force--somewhere from 1.5g to 2.5g...probably 1.8 or near.

Also, the Hana may recommend a loading for the phono stage (Lehmann)--if not, start the Black Cube at around 100 ohms and then switch the DIP switches around and change the loading until you like what you hear.

I'll try to find some info on it.
