Spend $100 and get VibraPod isolation cups and a slab of granite to go under the table.

Play around with speaker placement...even 4" in one or the other direction can make a big difference.

If you need help getting the table done...holla.

Yeh. I'll be getting the vibrapods and granite soon. I didn't even put them on the stands. I just wanted to make sure shite worked first.
I picked up a gauge and think I got it about dead on to what VPI said to have it at. I got lost in it for a while. Listened to music for 2hrs.

I like the integrated amp. Bluetooth works well and sounds good considering it's Bluetooth. Need to pick me up a cable for that too (phone to amp). Audioquest has some decent ones for that as well.

Talked with roger today... he apologized up and down about the cables. He said "no way man, several of us checked that" the pic on the site that they have shows bi-wire. He is getting new cables made at the factory for me. He said they are better than the ones I have and he will even swap. Not sure which ones as I was driving and didn't catch which ones he said.

Said, man we lost our arse on those cables... I feel like a dumbass.
I told him not to worry about it, he said he does b/c he cares that I get the right shite.
I should have them by the end of the week, which is good b/c I'm out all week.

I told you he would make it right. I am glad to hear he is doing just that.

Also, the VTF (vertical tracking force), is determined by the cartridge, not the turntable. Every cartridge has a desired VTF. It is always stated in the owners manual for the cart as well as online on the manufacturer's website.

What cartridge are you using? It should be somewhere between 1.6 and 2.2 grams.

I also have a device called The Fosgometer, which allows fine setting of azimuth, which is the lateral position of the diamond in the groove. THIS is the device.

Also, if you need some cables to get you by, let me know...I have a ton of cables in all lengths, terminations, and pedigrees.

Yeh, got the VTF... just not wording this right. VPI said it's at 1.8. Read the instructions and looked up some videos to make sure I did it right. It should be pretty dead on.

That fosgometer is pretty detailed stuff. Once things slow down with work, maybe I'll run by one day and get you to do a once over on the turntable. Probably ought to right? It's way nicer than I thought I'd be getting st first.

Also, appreciate the cable offer. I won't have a lot of time next week to put into them. I'll be in meetings all week so it's no big deal.

Listening to music through a real audio rig really makes a difference. Hopefully every change you make over the years yields a noticeable audible difference.

HerbertFest08,

...from your speaker pic on the previous page...if you close the door behind the speaker when you do critical listening, your bass response will increase bigly. Remember that the Vandersteens are "semi-open", and creating a "corner" with the room walls is akin to a speaker cabinet.

Just for shits and grins, close the door and temporarily place the speaker about 2-3' from the rear and side wall--you should hear a much more pronounced bass response.

Man... I'm kind of at a lost of what to do with the speakers. I'm not set since I'll be sending the cables back this week and getting new ones. I have a corner for one, but not the other. As it's a hallway (no door), I didn't think about that at first... the speakers are not where I was listening in the pic. Did a little cleaning and moved them back a bit. I also don't have them on the stands yet either.

Pull the one on the left out 2' and to the left 2'. Pretty much on the left and outmost green tile. Pull the right one equal to it, with 7-8' between the two.

You may want to put a slider under it so you can move it easily if you need to pull it out to a good position when listening and back in when not in use.

You should be in an equidistant triangle with the 2 speakers. If they are 7-8' apart, you should be approximately 7-8' away when listening.

HerbertFest08...So, even with the speakers not ideally placed, what do you think?...worth the money? When you first plugged them into the amp and played a tune, was it immediately noticeable? Did you feel it?

I ask because every time I made a substantial equipment change (amps, pre, speakers), it was kind of a "holy crap" moment for me. I remember when I replaced my JM Lab (Focal) Electra 926 speakers (1" tweeter, 6.5" mid, and (2) 7" woofers), which are no slouches by any stretch, with my current Focal Alto Utopias (almost 200lbs. apiece), I was blown away within the first 30 seconds of music playing...EVERYTHING was bigger, wider, deeper, higher--across the board. I wasn't expecting that huge a difference. At that moment I told Mrs. Esquandolas "worth every penny!"

About a year later I moved away from an Audio Research 70wpc tube amp to the McIntosh MC501 500w mono bloc amps--again, "holy crap!"...finally having some big time muscle pushing the Focal Utopias took them to a whole other level. I was able to push them to concert levels without any high/mid breakup.

A year later I moved from the McIntosh c2300 single chassis pre amp to the c500 dual chassis reference pre amp and again, the difference was heard within 30 seconds.

Each time I made a change I would begin to listen to my music library as if it were the first time, all the while discovering things on those recordings that I never heard (or felt) in the previous system. The biggest immediate differences were the extreme low end bass (that's what a big speaker will deliver), and a gigantic soundstage--as wide as the entire room (that's what a reference pre amp will deliver).

Since I made the big jumps up a year apart each time, it gave me the opportunity to get used to the system with one component changed out, then get used to its nuances, and then be able to tell the differences when I changed another piece out again a year later.

You have built a darn good rig--hopefully you will enjoy the hell out of it, and down the road, make changes to get even bigger, wider, and cleaner sound allowing you to experience your music library all over again!

Yeh man...

I was excited and I was hoping I wasn't expecting too much (w/o really knowing what to expect) if that makes any sense. I was not disappointed one bit. As a matter of fact, my buddy who basically got me started on getting a turntable was the first I called. I told him we needed to get him some real shite. he has this little TT in a box basically. I told his cheap arse we would get him something nice for his new house. I'll get that done when I get him in here to listen.

I kind of got them halfassed and put it on... and all I could think was this shite is awesome. the sound was amazing (to me). I listened to isbells southeastern and it reminded me of watching him live the couple of times I've seen him. They have great clarity (again to me) and I could hear details you can't here off of the digital stuff. Listened to a couple more albums. Then I switched up the mood and connected Bluetooth to the amp and played "shine on you crazy diamond" . Played for a couple minutes then decided to finally turn it up and holy shite! Felt like I was hearing the song new again. The bass kicked in with it turned up and it's a good tight bass.

That being said, I didn't realize what I actually had until I listened to Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds live at music city. Wow. I just sat there and listened to the whole album, drinking some cold ones. Felt like I could hear every strum and pick of every string. Again just me, but I went from not driving to driving a classy sports sedan... like an Audi S8 or something. Again, this shite was through a Bluetooth connection. I want the album now.
The really sound good cranked up a bit, but at low volume you can still hear everything. Just not a ton of bass, which i knew going in with these vandys. That being said I've already started to plan kind of what I'd like to do in the future.

The Nomad makes it easy to upgrade the cart from the ortofon red, to blue and to the black. Maybe possibly getting the vandy sub and or several other things. Maybe a better or (not necessarily better) more powerful amp and use the vena as a pre amp. As of now that won't happen for a while, but my need for research will fill the passing time. At least I have some sort of idea now and I know I can get some big time advice will
Keep that upgrade bug around.

Can't thank you enough for helping me out with all this Marco. Appreciate it!

Now I just need my cables back!

Also...remember that the Vena has a 24/96 DAC--you can download Audirvana Plus for $50...this will allow you to use a hi-rez player with Apple iTunes as a library system. It basically "boots out" itune's player, but still allows you to use its interface.

What does this mean to you? For $50 and the cost of a hi-rez download ($20), you can plug your computer directly into the DAC on the Vena and stream hi-Rez 24/96 within minutes...they sound fantastic.

You can buy hi-Rez files from AcousticSounds and HDTracks. There are plenty others, but those are more established and have large selections.

You can download Audirvana, Amarra, or Pure Music...they all do the same thing and are all around $50--they replace the "player" in iTunes with its own while allowing you to still use iTunes as a library system.

Why do you need to download one of these players?--because while iTunes will store hi-rez files, the "player" in iTunes is only capable of resolutions up to 16/44.1k (CD quality).

Try it out--you have a nice new DAC in the Vena...
