We’ve been playing a lot of Jazz playlists while sitting out in the back. I also recently purchased Samara Joy’s newest album, she won the Grammy for best new artist. I really like it.

Also look up Panorama Jazz Band from New Orleans.

Took a look at a couple of videos on YT. Enjoyed them, thanks. Like that mix of ethnic flavors in jazz.

I like going to jazz clubs. I also like free jazz and avant- garde type stuff.

Jazz is a beautiful art form and definitely not old people music. Almost all of the revolutionary jazz albums were made by artists under the age of forty. I think for anyone to truly reach their potential as a songwriter/musician you must at least have a rudimentary knowledge of the jazz staples. Country/pop/rock/polka/etc

Just my opinion

The founder/leader of Panorama is Ben Schenck, who also was one of the original members in the Klezmer All Stars. He had a falling out with Klezmer's founder, Glenn Hartman, which led to Ben starting Panorama. Also see if you can find anything by Charlie and the Tropiclales - its a band started by Charlie Halloran, who is the trombonist in Panorama; fantastic rumba infused jazz.

Huge new discovery and day 1 buy for me - live recording of John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy from their Village Gate residency in 1961. This is looks like it's a few months before the Nov. 1961 Village Vanguard live sets which of course were issued several years ago as a 4 CD box set.

One of my favorite 'Trane tracks is "Africa" and I've long loved the Africa/Brass record as it's one of the more unique items in his discography with the expanded lineup of Dolphy along with a few more brass (of course) players including Freddie Hubbard. I always wanted to hear a live version of Africa but never found one before, so this is very exciting to me.

NPR article - Lost John Coltrane recording

Edit...

1) Order for LP, CD etc is here: Center Stage

2) Per The Guardian article, this is the ONLY known non-studio version of "Africa". SUPER stoked to hear this!!!

If you like Kessel, highly recommend that you look up Joe Pass. he has three separate albums entitled Virtuoso (numbered sequentially) and also several duo albums with Ella Fitzgerald on vocals. Plus, an inordinate number of other lps under his name and as a sideman (notably with Oscar Peterson).

Jazz has evolved so much that acoustic, traditional jazz (which is what I assume you’re talking about) is nearly dead. I doubt they’ll be teaching it in the universities after the Gen Z’s all finish college. That was mostly what was keeping it alive. Nowadays you’ll hear it during cocktail hour before a wedding, or in bigger cities a jazz club, but man, it’s mostly dead.

Not sure, but from what you’re describing compared to the stuff today, you probably enjoy the rawness. Nothing wrong with that. I personally get a little tired of hearing the same standards (“All of Me”, “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, “Night and Day”) etc.

Jazz, the last refuge of the untalented?

I heard that line in a movie and it stuck with me.
Jazz is great if it avoids self- indulgence.

I love Jazz. Old and new. Aside from those who have already been mentioned, I also love listening to Count Basie. If you like modern Jazz, particularly Jazz guitar, you should listen to Norman Brown. Celebration is a good album to start with. There is a song on that one called Together at Last that just feels right for chilling out.

ABC was GREAT. I have all their records. One of my all time favorite Pullen works is Aseeko! (Get Up & Dance).

Kele Mou Bana is another.

Jaimie Branch was fantastic and such a tragic loss so young. She was just getting notice and had done some fantastic work with her "Fly Or Die" group.

Someone else along those lines 25 years ago who I was VERY fortunate to see live a couple of times and blew me away was Thomas Chapin. Inspired by Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Eric Dolphy, he played alto sax, flute, and occasionally bass clarinet. He had a better run than Branch for about a decade but died of leukemia at around 40. He made a series of records on Knitting Factory with his trio plus different augmentations - strings, brass etc - that are just phenomenal.

Here's a clip giving a taste of Chapin on flute & alto: Thomas Chapin @ Newport 1995
