I drive a truck and am having to stay gone more and more recently. I always keep a guitar in the truck, but it takes up a lot of room, and it takes a lot of maneuvering to play,as a result,I play less and less.

I want to try mandolin a bit,it's small, easy to grab, can play it sitting at the wheel with the seat kicked back. I want to buy a good one,my question really is: Is The F style worth the extra money? Is there a bigger difference than just looks?

There isn't a difference in tone. I personally like the A style appearance better and that's what I have....Its a fender that cost about $300. It sounds and plays great although I don't play it much anymore.

I dig the looks of the F style better, but they play the same. You know they are not tuned like a guitar (but guess you could if you wanted to).

Something you might explore also is a smaller bodied guitar. I have a Taylor GS Mini Mahogany that I really love. I have a full size Taylor as well, but the Mini just feels so comfortable and easier to carry around.

thanx for the replies, I think I am gonna go ahead an get an F style.

Tuning doesn't really matter, I have several guitars that I keep in different tunings, just so I can pick one up when I want to play a bit differently.

It's all looks. And roughly $300 on average for the same components used in the a-style version, if it exists.

Check out Eastman mandolins. I play the 505. I can't speak highly enough about the quality of the stuff they put out. They're Chinese made, but they're all hand carved and I believe they're all solid woods...the 3-series may use laminate, but I don't believe it does. Most prices should include a soft/hard combo case (mine is basically a fabric-wrapped hard shell).

Have you tried a Martin backpacker?

Certainly better than nothing. They also make a compact mandolin, for that matter.

I just picked up a cheap A-style at a shop in Bristol Tn. it's chinese made, was 100 bucks out the door and has a really cool blue moonburst finish. It's junk, but I guess it will be good enough to let me know if I want a good one.

The Brand name is ASHVILLE
