12 string guitar players, how much do you actually use the instrument?

I picked up an old 12 string Yamaha a few weeks ago and it sounds beautiful,so I have been playing it a good bit. It's my first 12 string.
It's got a wide, thick neck and the action is a bit high, but it really seems to be improving my playing,I mean dramatically. Have you found this to be the case also?
I suppose it's really limited on what it is good for,but it can sure give a very different vibe to a lot of songs.

I played one once. It sounded beautiful, but I felt like a fish out of water. It was very different.

I've got a Taylor 12-string and a Seagull 12-string. Love 'em, especially when you've written a song that fits the instrument. I play mostly open chords, which I think works well on a 12-string. You get used to the chunky neck, so the discomfort goes away pretty quickly.
The sound can't be beat, especially, as I said, if you've written something that goes well with the instrument.
Plus ... well, a 12-string can make even a so-so player like me sound pretty good ....

Agreed. 12-string guitars are for 12-string guitar songs in my experience. I've got maybe 10 originals that work as 12-string songs, plus a few covers. It's not nearly as universal in application as a 6-string, at least in my opinion.

Jeez, I have never even seen anything like that. That's a really wide neck there.

I have an old Washburn, had the action lowered and bridge changed out, putting the strings closer together. Thus, I can finger pick like a 6 string. Like others said, hard to beat the sound......

It sure takes longer to get it tuned, but luckily, this one stays in tune very well. I have been trying to play the same way I always play, but really have to concentrate to do the same licks. I guess that is why it is helping when I pick up one of my other guitars.

Disagree. I played a 12 for a long time. Still have it although I haven't been playing much lately. Little Pink Houses sounds just as good as Edmond Fitzgerald on a 12 string. If you want a real great song for the 12 try Behind Blue Eyes by the Who.

He's okay--but can he do the solo on Inna-Gadda-da-Vida?

I put it up there because that´s an invention of his, and he uses it all.
I am amazed with seeing some of the young 12 stringers, but don´t know (I´m a drummer, my brother´s a guitarist) how much value is in the 12 stringer. I see amazing prowess, but don´t get much aesthetic/sonoric pleasure out of it.
Also, I thought it interesting like Auggie said, how this guy got around that mammoth beast with such purpose and perfection.

I am a finger picker too,and it is harder on the 12 string, but I think that is why it is making a difference so fast.
I have sanded the saddle a bit,and adjusted the truss rod,but the action is still higher than my other guitars. Since it seems to be helping, I am going to leave it the way it is. I can still manage clean notes all the way to the 12th fret, and that's good enough.

I think the biggest thing,it can give a sort of haunting tone, and that just doesn't belong in some stuff.

I bought a Mandolin the other day, probably one of the dumbest things I ever did. I should have known better, but I really wanted to try it.It aint ever gonna work.

I have a 12 string Martin but rarely had 12 strings on it b/c didn't know how to tune it tbh. With digital tuners nowadays its a snap. Since I played it for so many years with only 6 strings a regular sized guitar seems cramped to me now.

I fell your pain. After playing my 12 string for a while and regular 6 feels like a mandolin. An actual mandolin, forget it!

Have you tried a finger picking neck? it's wider, in between a 12 string and a regular neck.

Disagree. I played a 12 for a long time.
On second thought, I'm inclined to agree with you. I imagine though, that you're a much better guitarist than I am, and I mean that honestly, not in sarcasm.
At my level--strummer/rhythm player--I probably have fewer songs I can carry off on a 12-string. But that doesn't mean a good player is so limited, I understand that.
12-string acoustics rule though. I love playing mine.
