Watching it on Spike right now. Haven't seen it in a while. It's still a great film. It really showed that despite the recent slew of Batman shitfests there could be a solid super hero film. Very thankful for what it did.

But one thing I can't figure out is why - despite nailing it by featuring so many important and popular X-Men - they failed to introduce Gambit. It seems like the leaned heavy on the popular characters from the 90s cartoon, so I can't understand how Gambit didn't make the cut.

Is there any solid reasoning behind this? Any speculation that's gained traction over the years?

people wanted gambit for years and when we got him, he sucked.
They also ruined Cyclops. He was a pushover in the movies.

Yeah well I put that on being introduced in a movie that had no idea what to do with great characters (Sabertooth sucker and we all know what they did to deadpool.)

And I agree on Cyclops. He was so bland. I always kind of blamed Marsden, but after seeing him in Westworld I don't think it was on him.

Gambit was the best thing in Origins (other than pre-mutant Wade Wilson).

They did and now Marvel has followed their lead and ruined and lamely killed him off in the comics.

I blame you Singer. You piece of twink shite. Mark my words Singer. You will rue the day! Rue it!

Oh and to the topic at hand, I never understood why more wasn't done with Gambit. You would think he would've at least been in the running to make the cut for X1 but then he wasn't in part 2 either.

He would've been perfect for First Class but I think Fox already had a Gambit solo film in the plans at that point so maybe thats why they didn't use him there.

Don't hate me, but I always though Magneto was miscast. He was too old.

Did you watch the 90s show or read the comics?

I spent every weekday afternoon glued to the xmen and spiderman 90s cartoons. This movie brought them to life for me and did it in the best way they could. It has flaws, of course, but it's largely more good than bad.

I liked it as a kid, but it hasn't aged very well, mostly due to the great movies that came after it like Iron Man and The Dark Knight. X-Men set the standard, a bar which would later be raised.

I do take contention with the idea that it was the first "good" superhero movie as my childhood self would argue "Batman: Forever" should take that honor. I will admit, however, that X-Men 1 was the beginning of the modern age of comic book movies, for better or worse.

I still remember the backlash they for for Hugh Jackson because he was too tall.

So much for that.

Batman Forever is generally regarded as not a great film. It's better than Batman & Robin, but the two previous Batman films are held in higher regard.
