Any boxing movie where they are swapping 30 haymakers. And that's pretty much every one except maybe The Fighter.

1. The Roid Raiging General - Think Avatar. I'm sure there are some overly aggressive military figures in real life, but Hollywood needs to take a fvcking chill pill on these archetypes. These blood-thirsty meatheads they conjure up are completely unrealistic and sometimes I find them borderline insulting to some of the real leaders we have in our military

Unfortunately, there are a lot of Colonels that are EXACTLY like the Colonel in Avatar.

I'd say a worse stereotype is the stupid officer that has to be bailed out by the "brilliant Soldier".

The wise old black man is getting worn out.

A few examples

Scatman Crothers - The Shining
Laurence Fishburn - The Matrix
Morgan Freeman - Everything He Does
Denzel Washington - Book of Eli
Bill Cobbs - Get Low (good under the radar flick btw)
Ron Glass - Firefly

This pretty much goes back to Uncle Remus days. I actually like the trope for the most part. But it has gotten to be overused by lazy filmmakers.

The way that the South is portrayed by Hollywood and especially TV is sickening. I recently wrote a research paper on it.

Over the top villains like Dennis Hopper's Deacon character in Waterworld have ruined a lot of movies for me. I hate the way most of the post apocalyptic movie bad guys are portrayed, but for some reason I love The Road Warrior/Mad Max bad guys. Those guys were over the top, but they were awesome over the top, not silly over the top.

I believe this actually has a name in the movie community, if I'm not mistaken it's called "The Magical Negro" (not being racist or anything I legit believe I read that somewhere)

I read about it a while back too in reference to the legend of bagger Vance. The article I was reading was criticizing that movie for being stuffed with cliche.

I hate CNN, but they've got a couple of good articles on the Southern stereotype.

a couple of good articles on the Southern stereotype.

Good reads, especially the first one. Lots of truths about people's perceptions being tied to a few movies. Many of our own perceptions of ourselves may come from seeing/reading certain movies/books as children.

I saw Gone With the Wind in a theater in Natchez, MS as a child. For some reason they showed it when I was in elementary school in the mid-sixties. I never read the book, but for some reason I already knew all about it. I think I'd heard my mom & my aunts talk about it. it was a big deal that they showed it, there was a lot of build up for it and we had to wait in a long line to see it.

I think people my parent's age were greatly affected by that movie. I think I was affected by reading some Southern writers. As a child, I saw a lot of relatives and other people as being like characters in a Faulkner book.

My mom had an aunt who's husband owned a cotton gin in Mer Rouge, LA & all of the land for as far as you could see on both sides of the two lane hwy they lived on. Instead of just being stereotypes, they were the genuine article!

I still think my great uncle as being a mixture of Big Daddy Pollit & Boss Will Varner. Their whole family cussed like sailors, my cousin was allowed to have Playboy in high school & they drove Cadillacs & Lincolns. Pretty sure the black men that worked for them called my uncle "Cap'n".

I always thought of them as the crazy relatives like everyone else in The South had. Thought having crazy relatives like them was unique to Southerners until I went off to school & beyond and met non-southerners who had crazy relatives too.

I agree with what Patterson Hood said here:

quote:

He blames the persistence of Southern stereotypes on the twin bogeymen of media and politics -- but admits that both reflect certain truths.

"I think the decisions my fellow Southerners make in the voting booth makes us look like dumb-asses. We vote like stupid rednecks, so it's easy to pigeonhole us there," he says.

Politicians do use fear to keep groups divided. I think politics is part of why some whites go out of their way to be as redneck as possible while some blacks go out of their way to be as hood as possible. Both wear their extreme like a badge of courage.

The one punch knockout where the guy is asleep for 3 minutes

The badass villian who has killed many people but cant hit the good guys with a full clip from 15 feet away

The corrupt cop whom everyone believes, while no one believes the good cop

People in the south cant speak normally and all live on a swamp or canal with snakes and alligators, and all the men drive old beat up pick up trucks
