Will we see the 80s/90s character movie series again?

I guess Madea(sp?) is the only recent example we have...
But I am talking about something along the line of PeeWee or Ernest.
They were/are great characters. Much better than the one and off or two and off simple characters that seemed to be recycled in comedies today.
These performers actually invested in their characters. There was depth and it showed from their series of movies.
Will we see something like this again? Or is it a shallow movie and an even shallower sequel?

Not sure if many actors relish the idea of being typecast.

Do you really think it was/is a typecast?
This was an act that they brought from stage to screen and did so successfully.
But that is a good point about seeing/not seeing these types of series again.
BUTTTT...for the first time in Hollywood we see a mixing of Hollywood royalty/award winners and lower quality actors working together. More assimilation than ever before.

The main character in the adult swim T.V. series Delocated would have been able to pull off what you're talking about.

It has been tired and failed miserably...
Larry the Cable Guy
His whole comic persona is a made up act and there have been several movies that he starred in and all failed.

Larry the Cable Guy was the last like this I could think of.
Usually it's a comedian, in fact it's always a comedian who is in movies like this. For it to work again you need a comedian that is typecast and has an act that would work in movies.
Also, the last PeeWee Herman movie (the one that came out two months ago) is one of the worst things ever.

Will Ferrell may have been able to do it but Anchorman 2 sucked and I have no desire to see Ricky Bobby 2. His act just grew old. Same with Mike Myers and Austin Powers. I'm still optimistic about Bill and Ted 3 though.

Pretty sure this has always been happening

Do you think maybe this is just a matter of perception? Pretty much every other comedy attempt of late seems to be an attempt to do what you're describing.
Will Ferrel movies mostly
Adam Sandler movies mostly
Paul Blart
Tammy
MacGruber
Popstar
ETA clarification with quote below
They do the sequels when the originals are popular enough (e.g. Paul Blart, Grown Ups, Anchorman)

When's the next Vince Vaughn movie coming out?

I could see Johnny Knoxville's Irving Zisman character getting another one or two Bad Grandpa movies.
The only other examples I can think of are the characters from the Broken Lizard, Three Flavours Cornetto, and The Lonely Island movies. And that's kind of a stretch since they're not playing same characters, just similar ones in every movie.
