Will JGL be the first actor to get Oscars for both best Actor/Supporting Actor?

Not sure if this has happened before but he has plenty of material where he deserves both awards. I would be shocked if he doesnt get a nod for his roles in Looper and The Dark Knight Rises. Anyone else agree?

Also he is in Lincoln which already has Oscar buzz so he has a chance with the supporting actor award for that. It would be amazing to see him win it then go against his costar DDL for best Lead Actor.

Highly doubt it.

If he didn't get a nod for "50/50", he sure as hell isn't getting one for those 2 films. Neither of those films are among his better performances. If someone gets the Best Supporting Actor nomination of TDKR, its Michael Caine, not JGL. Highly doubt he gets nominated this year.

this is straight up dumb. the love for this good, but terribly overrated actor on this message board is borderline childish.

Who do you think should win it then? JGL in Looper was amazing and deserves a shot at the Oscar. Dude has PAID his dues and finally deserves recognition.

Watch more movies. Highly, highly doubt he gets a nod this year, and if he does, it will likely be from his performance in Lincoln, even though I'm not aware how he performed currently.

For starters Daniel Day Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Joaquinn Phoenix, and Martin Freeman will highly likely get the Best Actor nomination, and with Best Supporting the competition gets even more fierc ewith Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alan Arkin, Robert DeNiro, and Javier Bardem.

I'd take the chances of him getting either nomination close to 1%, and even less than that for him to get both nominations, not to mention actually winning both awards. A basic impossibility.

He is way too young for "paid his dues" to factor in. I think he's a nice actor, but you fanboys really turn me off to him. Chill out. He'll be rewarded in due time.

Would you mind naming the films for these specific actors? Not sure I've seen them yet.

FWIW it's never happened before in the same year

In 1944 a guy got nominated in both categories for the same role, and won supporting

Barry Fitzgerald (with Bing Crosby) in Going My Way

Denzel got oscars for both, but are you talking about in the same year? Because I'm pretty sure that's never happened.

He's "PAID his dues"? How, exactly, has he PAID his dues?

I like the dude, and he's a good actor, but the fawning all over him around here is laughable sometimes. You really think he'd get a nomination for TDKR? He was a minor character in that. Hardy, Caine, Hathaway, Oldman, and Freeman (maybe even Cotillard) would all deserve it more than JGL...and I'd be surprised if any of them got nominated (except maybe Michael Caine..he's awesome).

Looper was really good, but nothing JGL did was spectacular or anything. It was a fun sci-fi movie. I'm not up on how the Academy comes up with the nominations, but I'd be surprised if he got a nod for Looper, and absolutely shocked if he got anything for TDKR.

Anyone else agree?

Not even a little bit.

ETA: I'm talking about specifically to this thread...I'm sure if JGL stays in the business that he'll eventually win some awards. He's a good actor, sure. But Looper and TDKR aren't the best examples of why he's good. I agree with whoever it was that said that if he didn't win awards for 50/50, then these two movies certainly shouldn't win him anything.

This board and JGL . . . can't even be classified as infatuation. Can't be classified as love. Closest thing is obsession, delusion, stalker.

He's aight.

He's no Shia Lebouf though. That's for sure.

JGL isn't even in the hunt for the acting categories this year. I wouldn't even call him a dark horse for either category.

I defer to pretty much everything Cocomo said (except the quality of Looper... I haven't seen it), but especially this part.

Oh, and DDL is winning the Best Actor Oscar. I haven't even SEEN Lincoln and I can state that with some degree of confidence. It's pretty much the Oscar-baitiest role ever taken.

Looper was really good. But you won't really watch it and be like "Man, JGL simply blew me away with this...he deserves Best Actor." Not even remotely would you think that.

And I agree on DDL. Seems like that movie/role was made to win Oscars, plain and simple...it's the kind of movie that the Academy jizzes themselves over.

I agree with you here. The guy is a good actor, but you people are reading too much into this.

50/50 was probably JGL best chance for award recognition. The categories are just going to be too strong most years.

I don't get the hipster love for JGL. Doubt he'll ever win an Oscar. He's always gonna be the kid with the goofy pony tail from 3rd Rock to me.
