Why does The Imitation Game not get as much love as Boyhood/Birdman, etc.?

Perhaps I am in the minority but I thought The Imitation Game was outstanding. Honestly, one of the best films I have seen in a long time. The pace and the acting were top notch. Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley should get more love. And Matthew Goode and Mark Strong were great.

The Imitation Game was a perfectly well-done movie that was enjoyable to watch. However, it is also completely bland from both a technical standpoint and an artistic one. No chances or risks were taken in the set up and the making of the movie.

I mean it has a ton of Oscar nominations. That's pretty damn impressive and means it is still getting a lot of love.

When a guy almost single handedly defeats Germany in WW2 and invents the computer, he is one of the most important human beings in world history.

The movie chose to focus on his being a closeted gay man and it diminished the movie. Too heavy handed. The movie made itself about his preference for penis rather than his being one of the more important people that has ever lived.

Ummmm..... The idea behind the movie is that he was so great and he got treated like dirt for his homosexuality despite being a great man. that is paramount to his story. He practically got murdered for his self being. I understand your point in that there are multiple ways that they could show his life but his sexuality is as part of who he is as anyone in history because the ignorance of the British government robbed us of a great mind because of it.

After watching Boyhood, the love its receiving bothered me a bit. It was not a good film. I've since softened my stance a bit though since it probably won't win a big prize.

I need to check out Imitation Game. Birdman and Whiplash are the only two the I've seen and they should be dominating the award season discussion.

This might be the reason it isn't getting more love.

How can you say that? The whole movie was focussed on him building the machine and his inability to interact with others. The flashbacks showed his struggle to interact with people as much as it did his homosexuality. And in the final act him being gay was a huge part of the story because, you know, it's a driving factor in why he committed suicide.
Honestly him being gay wasn't even part of the story until the last 30 minutes or so

I think most people who've actually seen it really liked it.

Scoop, that's really not the case. They included that part of his life because it's integral to his story. But they didn't spent the majority of screen time focusing on it.

And the movie decided to tackle too many parts of it.

It was a good movie, but it relied too heavily on the opposite side of the script when they were on the other.

I mean, an expert code breaker didn't realize the cypher for a message is what is always at the end? Come on.

That was thrown in there for the dumb audience members...and goes right to my point. Oh, we're over here doing a character study...and here's the Eureka moment in the code breaking. And before that we were code breaking, we dont know what to think of Turing...

Heck, there probably wasn't enough of his lifestyle shown. It went from him being caught to being chemically castrated without any of the trial. Was there a trial?

I know this was a true story but it felt almost exactly like A Beautiful Mind, even going as far as having a bar scene with chicks be the inspiration for the Eureka moment.

Good movie and certainly an interesting bit of history but I doubt this is a movie I will watch again.

I think the move kind of lost it's way during the last 1/3. The focus went from the machine to Turing's private life. I get how the treatment of Turing was wrong, I just think the climax happened too early. They went really quickly from MI6 plots for counter-intelligence to Turing's private-life. Some missed opportunities IMO.

Can't disagree more with those who are saying the story focused too much on his sexuality. The story was about the vulnerabilities of a man who was brilliant and did a great thing in spite of himself and not because of it. It chronicled his struggles in a perfect way-- trying to present to the audience how he interacted with his outside environment, sometimes by choice but mostly out of necessity.

It was critical for the audience immersion into the story and the characters to understand his demons and his reality. And ultimately how he was so well "rewarded" for his efforts.
