Why does Hockey translate so well in film

Seems like every Hockey based sports movie that comes out is pure gold
Miracle
Mystery alaska
Goon
Slap Shot
Mighty Ducks (don't hate)
Don't get me wrong the other sports have great movies also, but also have their share of misses. I don't remember many Hockey movies missing.
I'm not even a Hockey fan, but love these movies

How can you not like these guys?

The speed of the game lends itself to quick editing techniques so it seems like it would be difficult to screw up the action sequences. That's about all I can come up with.

People who like hockey are good movie makers

Boxing and baseball translate better on film IMO. Hockey films have been good but they pale in comparison to the likes of Raging Bull, Rocky, Field of Dreams and Moneyball.

It could be your lack of hockey knowledge that helps the film. You're far less likely to nitpick the sports action in a sport you don't intuitively know like basketball or football. I think baseball still makes the best movies. Hockey has had some highlights, even if the Flying V is a ridiculous offense.

I remember watching Remember the Titans for the first time and was dumb founded at the one scene where it's the last play of the championship game and the Titans were at their own 20. The opposing coach looks at the Titans formation and yells to his defense "WATCH THE DEEP PASS!"
I sat there thinking, no shite sherlock.

You forgot Youngblood and, to a certain extent, Strange Brew.
It's because hockey people are fun and they make fun movies. They stick together, have their own language, and are cultish. Goon, bender, duster, dangle, snipe, cellie, sauce, flow, clapper, just a few terms that, if you kow what they mean, you speak the language. A good hockey movie will live in iconic status. I was at a Total Hockey store in Bloomington, MN this weekend and they had each of these films for sale on DVD on the rack.

Goon is so great because it's a movie about chirping, and no sport holds up great trash talk to such a high degree as hockey, except maybe basketball. I mean, Goon is just overstuffed with outstanding lines of people busting each other's balls (as is Slap Shot).
But hockey also has that baseball Code of honor stuff, so it can circle back to the serious stuff pretty easily. It's a sport built for movie dialogue.

Good question.
I have no answer.
My 2 favorite sports are baseball and football, and for the most part I have hated most baseball and football related films.

I think hockey is already a really TV friendly game. Fast paced, physical, etc. so it translates easily to film. Baseball is also great for movies for the exact opposite reason. There are enough natural breaks that allow for film makers to build suspense for big moments.
Which they actually addressed in D2 when the Icelanders totally decimated the V.
To go off on a tangent, how was it that the District 12 Ducks were the only team in all of youth hockey in the world to have girls?

I would reverse those two. The best basketball movies are worlds better than the best football movies.

Very good point. As a golfer, Happy Gilmore and Tin Cup frustrate me.

That Ed Henry was supposedly a genius but didn't know to take a knee was bad enough movie football for me.

goon is the best hockey movie

If I watch a football or baseball movie I usually take notice when they deviate from what would really happen in a certain situation and replace it with hollywood BS. I don't know enough about hockey to be that observant while watching a hockey movie.
