Why does Dr. House always appear to be "poor"

Poor is a relative term here. He is head of his department and one of the best diagnostic Dr's in the country. Yet, he drives an old beat up car or motorcycle, always borrowing money from Wilson or maxing out credit cards. Not to mention he never seams to pay for anything.

Do diagnosticians make less..?? Is he irresponsible with his money..?? His ex is a lawyer, couldn't have lost a lot in that divorce with no kids. I've seen every episode and it's just always bothered me a little. One of the best doctors in the world but doesn't benifit financially from it..?? He hate money or something???

Because his character is so deep, it leaves you wondering about these types of things. How much money does he have? How good of a doctor is he? How smart is he? If you've watched every episode, you'd know he never came across a foreigner whose language he couldn't speak, and he always down played it.

One of the greatest shows of all time, would love to see a spinoff where they pick up with him in some obscure South African country curing diseases.

Does he seem like a fiscally responsible guy-- or does he seem like the kind of guy who would foot the bill for tests out of his own pocket if need be? Plus, drugs aren't cheap-- I mean even Rock Stars and Athletes (people who bank more than House by magnitudes) go broke on drugs. Add in eating out every single day, likely at high end places, top shelf booze, the inevitable malpractice settlements and its not shocking that he wouldn't exactly be loaded even if he's taking home say 20 grand a month pre-tax.

Edited to add: Hookers too-- if he's paying for high end call girls that's another expensive habit.

It has to be more than that. A girl from my high school in a smaller metro area of 30 k had parents who were both gynocologists and they were clearing 600k- 900k a piece a year.

They had a sick arse mansion. I went once and it was fucjing awesome. The house itself was mostly in a modern style with lots of glass but the trims themselves were old school mahogany.

Academic physicians make less (although someone with House's job would still make a good salary) than many private practice doctors. Salary is not based on how good of a doctor you are. Some of the smartest doctors I know are academic hospitalists who make surprisingly low salaries. Also, many doctors are on the eccentric side and tend to do things like drive vehicles until they fall apart when they can easily afford a new one. Go to a physician parking lot and you're likely to see several old cheap cars mixed in with expensive ones. There are many inaccuracies with the show obviously, but House's lifestyle is definitely not one of them. It actually fits very well with many of the crazier doctors that I've worked with.

He borrows from Wilson because Wilson is weak and he likes to take advantage of that in hopes Wilson will stop.. Occasionaly he does but always works back around to lending him money.. It's part of the game that makes their friendship work..

He also blows through money buying collectibles.. And of on multiple occasions we see him blow money just to prove a point

Eta:: as someone said. Don't forget the hookers

That seems impossible. Only 15000 women and they are pulling $1.8mil? Were they the only two in the area? You'd think any crazy procedure would go to the nearest real metro area with better facilities. $900k combined seems more reasonable

It's possible I remember wrong, but it's also possible they worked at a nearby institution. No clue. All of the doctors around here are abnormally loaded. Half of the metro is super super rich and the other half is super super poor.

I know a PhD/MD who makes low six figures. He could be extremely wealthy in private practice, but he loves research. If there's ever an Alzheimer's cure, his name will probably be on the academic paper.

You know Wilson is just a character House created in his head to help him overcome his shortcomings.

When has House been shown as a guy who would want an expensive car?

He is probably loaded. Just doesn't spend his money on fancy shite. None of that stuff is important to him

Another money sink- vinyl, if he's buying original pressings and has a high end audio system (which is something that would make sense) that could be six figures combined right there.

shite, I'd be happy if they came back with the same format. By now they could have a whole bunch of new story lines. That was a great show.

ETA: Oh and to the OP - Hookers and blow (vicodin actually). Plus, old vintage things cost $$

Pretty sure he'll never be able to legally practice medicine in the states again, which is why I think a spinoff would do well where he is some unknown in a foreign country showing up local doctors

Why buy things when you're self-centered enough to make it a game to get people to buy things for you?

Isn't this the personal philosophy of practically every semi-attractive or better looking woman under 45?
