Why do Young Guns I and II not get more credit?

Growing up, I absolutely loved Young Guns I and II. They were and still are two of my favorite movies of all time. Emilio Estevez was masterful as Billy the Kid, he took that role and completely made it his own. The supporting cast was also great, with Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips also killing it.

My question is, why are these two movies not mentioned with other movies that are considered great Westerns? Is it because of the time these movies were released? Are the John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies given ultimate status because of their time and lead actors? Critics didn’t look too kindly on the Brat Pack (Estevez, Sheen, Sutherland, etc.) so that could be part of the lack of standing also.

Those of you who have seen YG1 and 2, what is your take on these movies? Do you consider them great movies? Should they have higher standing?

I consider them good movies but at the time my future BIL loved them and I’ve watched them way to many times. Even back then it seemed like they were B movies.

I had never seen them and watched the first one a few years ago. It was……just okay. It was fine but I struggled to buy some of those brat pack dudes as badass cowboys. I felt like maybe I would’ve liked it more had I seen it 30 years ago. But it doesn’t hold up very well IMO I guess.

They’re solid entertainment they just dig as deep or reach as far as the classic (new and old) westerns.

Estevez's laugh gets really old after the 20th time.

The movies have their moments but are too campy to hold up with other westerns.

That's what make the movies so good. IRL they weren't badass cowboys, they were kids clowning initially. Not until Billy sees his wanted poster did he realize how serious it was & grew up a bit. He was only 22 when he died.

That group didn't kill near the people they were accused of.

I've read so much about the kid, I think they nailed the cast.

First one is really good. The second movie is garbage.

Fwiw, I remember reading a few months back that Young Guns 3 (with some of the original cast) is in the works.

Because they're not great?

They're strongly in the fun/silly tier within the action/western genre. Rarely do movies in that tier rise to the top of the genre they occupy.

I’m not sure if they’re good or bad, but seeing that chest getting thrown out the house on fire and Billy busting out blasting was some cool shite for a kid to see

I think it is bc the rewatch seems dated. I was watching part one yesterday and the background music during a horse chase seemed so 80s.

I was 14 when the 1st YG came out and loved the movie. Still do

Great movies, however they’ve been surpassed by other contemporary westerns.

Tombstone, open range, unforgiven, etc. they really just don’t compare, still very fun to watch.
