Ewoks are the reason I'm convinced Lucas founnd or stole the manuscripts for A New Hope and Empire; it was unfinished so he had to write the conclusion himself.

He didn't write ESB and was only involved in the writing enough to make RotJ worse than it should have been.

He was interested in selling toys to kids from the very beginning.
Besides, the Ewoks were fricking awesome when I saw RoJ as a kid. Everyone I knew wanted the Ewok Village playset. I don't know when it became cool to hate everything from our childhoods and think every minute of cinema needs to be dark, brooding, and gritty.
