Why did the GoT crew decide to use British actors?

The accent just fits the genre better? The seven Kingdoms are kind of like Middle Ages England?

I mean it wouldn't really work as well with the Starks having a Brooklyn accent.

Aren't there several Scottish and Irish actors in the cast?

Irish and Scottish individuals would be greatly offended and would probably attack you if you called them "British". Likely Welsh as well.

That's like being unable to tell Alabama from Auburn or LSU from UL-Lafayette.

It's filmed primarily in Ireland with some Scotland, Iceland, and Malta.

It's much easier to cast from the area and cheaper.

Probably like how all your family members are greatly offended when someone recognizes them as being related to you

that's always been the answer for me. for some reason i read all fantasy in the accent of British Isles.

i mean in LotR we had a bunch of american actors doing some form of accent. i would expect WoT to do the same.

Yes.

quote:

With its legions of ice zombies, fearsome dragons and powerful warlocks, it can sometimes seem as if Game of Thrones is a little farfetched.

However, dig below the surface and you will find it is largely based on historical events, as author George RR Martin has admitted himself.

For example, the Wall which separates the kingdom of the North from the wild lands beyond is based on Hadrian's Wall; the Andles, who first separated Westeros into seven kingdoms, are a reference to the Anglo Saxons, who separated England into seven kingdoms

The war between the Starks and the Lannisters also bears stark similarities to the Wars of the Roses between the English houses of Lancaster and York between 1455 and 1487.

Like the Starks, the House of York were northerners, like the Lannisters the House of Lancaster were southerners and extremely wealthy.

There are a lot more historical similarities at the LINK

Based, very loosely, on the Wars of the Roses. History, too. Targs represent the Normans (kind of). There were Viking settlements in Scotland and the Midlands (Greyjoys). The "First Men" probably Angles, Saxons and Jutes (maybe even Britons). Children of the Forest were the pre-Roman Celts/Druids. The Wildlings tend to have Gaelic accents (The Wall is a proxy for Hadrian's Wall separating England from Scotland's "barbarians), and so forth.

So, British accents make a lot of sense for the Westerosi - of course Dinklage and Coster-Waldau are American and Danish, respectively, but both affect British accents.

Glad they did. We're a big country and some are better than others but let's face it..our accent overall relatively sucks.

Shooting locations are probably the biggest factor. Locals are easier and cheaper. it's a whole lot easier to get work visas and what not in Europe with a European passport

Don't argue with him, he's frantically googling some shite to try and make what he said seem smart and not pompous idiocy.

Notice he already edited once
