You're looking for Excalibur. Just watch Excalibur - pretty decent flick and one if my first on screen boob experiences. it holds a special place in my heart.

It's great but still not quite what I'm looking for. Excalibur is kinda a depressing movie.

Fun fact, the girl who gets raped at the beginning is the daughter of the director.

that is a fun fact. I'll be sure to mention it at the next party I go to when there's a lull in conversation.

What exactly is a "normal" King Arthur movie? It's a freaking legend filled to the brim with fantastical tales of the Holy Grail, sorcery, witchcraft, and mystical beings.

I enjoyed the Camelot series that came on Starz a few years ago. It was based around the building of the knights and Camelot. Not a big fan of the mystical side but you got to see Eva Green's boobs. Mysticism and Camelot seem to go hand in hand unfortunately.

Merlin the series was a bit kiddish for the whole run but it had one of my favorite finales of any show.

The real question is why can't they make a great antiquity war movie?

I guess Spartacus and Gladiator comes the closest as a rebellion.

But Alexander the Great movies all suck.

Most Roman movies suck. (The Eagle was pretty damn good though but its such a tiny story).

Greek war movies suck. We have no Egyptian war movies.

Where's the Hannibal movie done in grand scale and fashion?

Attila the Hun? (they made Mongol - his childhood, which was great and there was supposed to be a follow-up as a trilogy but it never happened.)

I was listening to some historians commenting on the battle of Gladiator and I'll probably do a thread about it the next few days and they said the battle was only had two things accurate. It was bad enough that the historical consultant requested that her name be removed from the credits.

I'm with you. There are countless interesting battles and events littered through history, but instead we get a WWII movie every year. I guess they're expensive to make and not as popular. How badass would these be in a R rated big budget movie: Peloponnesian War, Jewish revolt in 70, Babylon toppling Assyria, Persia toppling Babylon, Maccabean revolt...

Kingdom of Heaven wasn't bad.
I love 300 although I know it's obviously a graphic novel.
Ironclad, Arn, and Black Death are very good Middle Ages movies but none are epic.
Ben Hur, Spartacus, and Gladiator are all I got for Roman.

The 1st, 3rd and 4th Crusades would each make incredible movies or miniseries.

And Troy wasn't all that bad. But not great either.

I just don't get why it doesn't work on screen or why people are afraid of that period.

You would think the Battle of Gaugamela or Marathon would be an epic story just in of itself...the backdrop, the major players, the battle and the aftermath, how it changed history.

I'm surprised we don't see more historical epics of the great female leaders. Boudicca or the Empress Theodora, etc. It would fit the PC culture and there really are some great stories. A steamy big budget biopic on Marie Laveau would rake in the money.

Yes it was.

Dude's right. They never make a good antiquity movie. Kingdom of Heaven is set during the Crusades, which I don't consider to be real antiquity.

Kubrick's Spartacus is good, but that's about it.

But Excalibur is awesome, and pretty much takes care of all my King Arthur needs. It's far from "accurate," though. The real Arthur, if he existed, would have lived some time in the 7th to 8th centuries. They didn't even have plate armor back then, and one of the Saints that Arthur swears by when he is knighted hadn't even been born.

It's expensive to film these kinds of movies.

Because it's expensive to make and if it doesn't work it'll bomb badly and they won't ever recoup their money.

The old school Hollywood epics of yesteryear will more than likely never be seen again.

If you want grandeur, chivalry, and great story telling you should watch the old movies of your grandfather's and great grandfather's days on TCM or order it on Netflix or something. I grew up as a kid watching that shite and was enthralled with the story telling, plots and such. shite like the Black Knight with Alan Ladd, Camelot with Richard Harris or Knights of the Round Table with Robert Taylor. Those old movies entertained with those old actors acting their asses off as if they were really living those times. Lol shite, even 1995's First Knight was entertaining with gigolo Richard Gere and Sean Connery, costumes might have been off though. lol
