River being in full beast mode, vs. the operative.

in an open environment.

Both have similar training, River has psychic ability, and the Operative has cold, calculating strategy.

I am really torn on this one.

Not a fair fight when River has psychic abilities.

But if anyone can beat her, it's the Operative.

The operative lost to Mal 1 on 1. River in full beast mode would wipe the floor w/him.

This. Mal does nothing but get his arse kicked throughout Firefly but manages to pull the upset against the operative. River would win in under 30 seconds.

He didn't lose the fight, he was tricked when Mal didn't have the nerve spot, which was a Mal only thing. Operative had him beat before that. quite clearly.

Mal was still standing at the end of the fight, the operative wasn't. Not sure how that doesn't qualify as winning the fight.

Mal fights dirty, he baited him and got the upper hand.

Oh no, I agree, but that kind of win doesn't mean the Operative can't beat someone of similar skill to Mal, just that he couldn't beat Mal. Quite different.

If he's having trouble with Mal while River is slaughtering reavers by the dozens, I think you have your answer.

If he can get himself beat by underestimating Mal I think he'd probably do the same with River.

The entire reason he loses in the end is b/c of his arrogance fueled by his belief in the system.

I just know the fight would get cancelled before it reached a satisfying conclusion.

but then years later they will try and retell a story of what happens after the fight and kill off a lot of favorite characters not involved in the fight while explaining what the fight was all about.

Yes - reaction time is a factor here - while The Operative is thinking about what to do next, River is having his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

This isn't a close fight, this is like Kyle Reese vs the Terminator- one's a highly skilled veteran fighter, an elite bad arse but the other isn't really human she's basically a killing machine who can read your mind and know what your planning.

I agree with this.

It makes me wonder what his plan was.
