Is Downey Jr. opening films, or are the films that he happens to be in opening because of the content? He's an amazing Tony Stark, no doubt, but the Marvel properties are performing regardless. Chris Evans and Chris Pratt were certainly not blockbuster leading men before they were handed the keys to golden franchises. I

Biggest movie star and most famous person are not one in the same necessarily. Clooney doesn't open films, not does he really act in films that look to set the box office on fire.

Actually I find it impressive that even though After Earth got shite on by reviewers, had bad word of mouth, everyone being sick of Will Smith shoving his kid down our throats, and everyone long knowing that Shamaylan was a hack, that it still made close to $250M worldwide.

A movie star is not some warm body that got propped up in front of a camera to play the lead in the latest episode of a franchise.
A movie star is someone who can draw audiences by the very mention of his name (and these days, it's pretty much always his name). Someone who can get a project greenlighted.
Although the true movie star seems to be fading away, there are a few left.

There is no guarantee that Iron Man would have been as successful a franchise without Robert Downey Jr. And if Iron Man had tanked or just had lukewarm reception, what would that have done to the rest of the Avengers movies?
