If I were to want to pick up and read right where season 4 ended, which book do I need to get?

Awesome show by the way, I finally broke down and binge watched all 40 hours.

Certain storylines in the series have been accelerated and the timelines don't necessarily match the books. They're already in the last published book (A Dance With Dragons). And some of the content has been off the page or departures from the books.

So there's not really a way to pick up and read where Season 4 ended. If you need to read, you'll need to read from the beginning.

Does it pay for me to read the series after watching after watching all 4 seasons?
Are they very different from the show?

I'd pick up the series with Storm of Swords. IMO, you don't miss too much between the first two books and the first two seasons. After that it starts to get a little bit more different.

It's not so much that there is a wide variance as it is just much deeper.

You'll see connections you never did in the tv show.

Yes it pays to read the series from the beginning. Reading the books will open your eyes to a lot of things in the series. The show and the books are different in a lot of ways. Both are really enjoyable. You have several months to read all 5 books before season 5 of the show starts.

Thank me later.

Could you get by? Yes. But this is just not true. There are a lot of details you can pick up on that will help you later. Plus, the books are great. Do yourself a favor and read them all.

Yes you will be a little bored in the first book, but the first book had A LOT of things in it that are important that season 1 doesn't cover. You will have a much better understanding of the overall story.

I started reading after the second season. I started at the beginning and didn't feel I gained much from reading the first two books after watching the first two seasons. Just my opinion.

Maybe you didn't read a lot into the first two books baw. There is a good bit of stuff in there that leaves clues for things later in the show. But maybe I read too much into them. I've rearead the series twice. Each reread I've picked up on different things.

Yes. Season 1 and book 1 are the most similar and its each season gets further and further away from the books

Maybe so. OP can probably get by reading a few chapters from the first two books to add to the show. In GOT I'd recommend reading Ned's dream as I don't recall that in the show and it has some nice knowledge bombs. There are probably a few more chapters, but I'd have to go back and look at the chapter summaries for each book.

He swam to a little rock island and sat there for a few day until a passing ship picked him up IIRC

Have you read the books? If so do you really not agree they are way better than the show?

Recommend listening to the audiobooks. I tried to get into the first book several times and couldn't, but started audiobook and really enjoyed it! Ended up listening to all of the books on audiobook and still enjoy the show. Much deeper story and character development/
