Watching All The Presidents Men on TCM and keep noticing how many great old time character actors are in it including Jack Warden, Hal Holbrook, Ned Beatty, and Jason Robards. It also got me thinking where the hell have all great American character actors have gone? Seems most all are now are Brits doing bad working class American accents in crime movies. Guys like Lee J. Cobb, Charles Durning, Abe Vigoda, and George Kennedy. They could do any genre be it drama, comedy, whatever and they could give Oscar caliber performances, but were rarely if ever the lead. They could absolutely steal a movie for a few scenes.

I guess the closest we had to those guys recently, especially as American actors go, was Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Well I would think that given the nature of their supporting roles, it's easier to appreciate them retrospectively.

I just watched Spotlight the other night, and Stanley Tucci seems to fit this role. William Fitchner also seems to be an actor who is solid in his supporting roles.

Luis Guzman says "hi"
Stephen Tobolowsky says "hi"
Stanley Tucci says "hi"
Luis Guzman says "hi"
William H. Macy says "hi"
Greg Kinnear says "hi"
Paul Dano says "hi"
Greg Melamund says "hi"
Michael Stuhlbarg says "hi"

Also I think that a lot of what we're seeing is a big mixing in movies nowadays.

yeah hollywood fell in love with the Brits the last 15 years...

Maybe they get cheaper rates compared to US unions.

You seriously comparing Greg Kinnear and Luis Guzman to Robards, Durning, Lee J Cobb, etc?? Tucci is the closest to those guys...the rest are JAGs.

John Goodman is certainly a character actor, but those other guys are all leading men. Shoot, the last four are romantic leads.
