I loved that movie when it came out.

Any movie that casts Sam Neill as a creepy bastard is going to at least achieve on that.
I liked it, kind of Hellraiser in space. Couple things that cheesed a bit with time-like the Horizon's decoded crew log including horrifying music, but it still scared the sh#t out of me first time I watched.

Definitely scared the shite out of me. Tried to make my wife watch it and she got too scared and turned it off. Like, almost in tears scared.

True, but didn't Weir also say that "Hell is just a word."
The dimension they go to thrives on chaos, but Weir is persistent that it isn't Hell
it is much worse.

It is way up there in creepiness/spookiness. A genuine horror movie set in space.

I like it mostly, but there's a big problem...
As far as production output versus quality, Sci-Fi/Horror movies ,as a small focused genre, are incredibly good. We're talking about Alien, and the whole franchise, The Thing, Videodrome, etc. So as far as a rank, it's quite mediocre just because the top of the heap is so outstanding.

The Gateway was designed by director Paul Anderson as an homage to the puzzle box from Hellraiser. Clive Barker was even a consultant to the film.
One of the special features from the DVD was entitled Visions of Hell.
Anderson also lifted sound effects from the video game Doom, which is also about Hell.
Dr Weir was named after a Dutch demonologist.
The original draft actually had it directly stated to be Hell, but it was altered to provide a little ambiguity.

Dr. Weir says this as an homage to Hell. He is not saying the dimension is not Hell. He is saying the dimension is much worse than what people understand Hell to be. It very well could be Hell, but the only way for him to strike the right amount of fear into the crew is to describe it in terms they can understand. He has become enthralled with the place. He has seen it, and is telling the people that humans cannot grasp Hell. Hell is much worse than the word that people have thrown around for millenia.
ETA: this movie ranked number 1 on my scariest list for a long time. I think I was like 12ish when I first saw it. Fricked me up bad
The story is much better than most horror films out there. I really can't think of another horror or horror/scifi film with a better premise/storyline.

if you want to have your mind blown, Sunshine is at 75%
not only does Sunshine rip off a lot of themes, shots, etc from Event Horizon, but it completely falls apart at the end
the biggest variable that leads to the difference, imho, is that paul ws anderson directed EH while danny boyle directed sunshine. perception taints/reflects a lot with movie reviews by major critics

I've never Event Horizon entirely. Have only seen bits and pieces here and there. I know people liked it on this board.
I get the horror movie vs. scifi thing. For example, Alien, a groundbreaking movie, was at least as much "horror movie" as science fiction.
Of course, I think you can make an argument that the original Star Wars is as much of a western as it is a science fiction movie.

I don't remember it well enough to know if it was hell or not. This statement is true though regardless if it is or isn't. I can easily see why people think they are referring to hell. This movie needs to be rewatched.
