I'd put it at the top right about now.

Nuketown.

(although I guess that was modeled after more non-fiction sites)

Maine is a pretty bad state to travel through in the King Universe.

Well, spoilers:

Just finished the greatness that was the IT novel and moved from that to 11/22/63 and rather early in the book, the main character says he's going to be going back to Derry in 1958 to stop a grisly murder and I got super big chills

Those folks that get a tingle down their leg for the continuity in the Marvel Universe haven't seen anything. Of course in the King Universe the tingle is down your spine as your head is lopped off by a crazed psychopath in the midst of a blood bool.

But Stephen King is just a talentless hack.

Never implied that. Just a comment on what a bunch of critics think. Yes, several of his films are pretty ridiculous, but his books, especially the intertwining ones, are glorious.

I have issue with his sayings and his actual writing. It is good enough (I still maintain that Barker is 10x the horror writer King is on a technical level) but King has a great ability with emotion and meaning that transcends 99% of writers. I thought I was going to cry when I got to the story of how Harry got hobbled in 11/23/63.

I think a big issue of his is he has just so many awful people in his stories. Like 1/3 of his characters are racists, 1/8 are murderous at heart, and the rest have other issues.

That sounds about right for the general population of America, if you ask me. Besides, he's supposed to build flaws into his characters, you wouldn't read a story about a bunch of decent people who got along with each other really well.

I'd say Derry and Arkham, Massachusetts (H.P. Lovecraft) rank right up at the top.

If we expand the term "fiction" to all genres Cabot Cove has to rank up there.

also in Maine, town in Murder She Wrote

much higher murder rate than Chicago, by orders of magnitude

(This is some comedian's joke from that era)

Wait til he gets there. I read "It" in 1985/6 when it came out.

I read 11/22/63 30 years later. When he gets to Derry, it literally brought me back to my childhood. The scene where he interacts with some of the townspeople is charming and brought a little moistness to the corner of my eye for nostalgia's sake.

Spoiler alert: The JFK stuff is kind of secondary once you get to the meat of the book.

King had not put that much heart, soul, and emotion into a book (11/22/63) since "It". So, in essence, you are reading his two best books in the last 30+ years.

I really enjoyed "Doctor Sleep". It's no "It", but it was a fun read.
