Its definitely top 5. I still put Ghost in the Shell as the clear #1.

Just ahead of Pluto Nash and behind Battlefield Earth.
Seriously, easily in the top 5 scifi and one of the top 25 movies of all time . . . in my opinion.

It's the most influential SciFi film ever made. Once you've seen it you will see it imitated everywhere.

Yup - it's an all-time SciFi great but have no idea where to place it on a subjective list. The story belongs in the same family as the likes of GATTACA and Frankenstein.
Additionally, pretty good look at Joanna Cassidy's boobs, too, IIR, and Sean Young went kind of bat shite crazy not too long after this.
I saw it in the cinema in 1982 - at that time, it was somewaht of a departure for Harrison Ford.
I'm always impressed by directors who can bring Phillip K. Dick stories to the screen so effectively - not all are as successful as Scott was.

If you start including animes, then Akira is definitely up there for me. And Cowboy Bebop, even if it's a damn show, is just phenomenal, though as far as influence is concerned, Macross is probably up there, too.

Why is it "the most important SciFi movie ever made?"
Well considering most directors, and not just science fiction directors, site it as an influence, I'd say it's pretty important.
It's a top 5 film for me (Final Cut that is). It's always on my deserted island list.
