I believe Alex is tier two. Not in Jennings's or Rutter's league, but pretty high up there. He apparently buzzes when he thinks he should know, not when he necessarily knows, and then uses his allotted time to come up with the answer. Great strategy if you possess a wealth of knowledge, as he does. He's got a weird personality, too.
