Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator. Not sure why that one stands out to me, it just does. I am a fan of all of his work, to me this one is his best.

Pure evil. Performance is one of the better ones of that decade. He got robbed at the Oscars.
This is one of my all time favorites:

I know it was just a voice part, but James Earl Jones as Darth Vader.

Like trying to pick a favorite song-too many to name, but I'd take Robert Duvall's fictional country singer Mack Sledge in Tender Mercies over the current field of dirt road wannabes in Nashville. Would also put his role in Apostle on the list.

So many great ones mentioned, including many of my all time favorites.
I'll add:
Duvall in Lonesome Dove. Captain Gus McRae is just too damn awesome.
How do you decide which acting performance is your favorite from Coen Brother's movies?
Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men
Nicholas Cage/John Goodman/Holly Hunter - Rasing Arizona
Gabriel Byrne/John Turturro - Miller's Crossing
Goegre Cloony/Turturro/Tim Blake Nelson - Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Goodman/Jeff Bridges/Turturro - The Big Lebowski
